Lena had never told Ava the full reason she escaped.
During her marriage, she worked as a junior attorney inside Cole Urban Development.
Ethan often demanded access to her work computer.
One night, Lena found a folder of payments to city officials, inspectors, and judges.
The records suggested Victoria had bribed officials to approve unsafe construction projects.
Several buildings later developed serious structural problems.
Lena copied the files.
Ethan discovered her before she could report them.
“He locked me in the apartment,” Lena said. “He told me I would leave only after deleting everything.”
“Did you?”
“I deleted the visible copy.”
Ava understood.
“You kept another.”
Lena nodded.
“I hid a flash drive inside the lining of a boxing glove at my old gym.”
Years later, the gym closed.
The property was purchased by Cole Urban Development and scheduled for demolition.
Lena believed the drive had been destroyed.
But Victoria’s message suggested they were never certain.
Break this one before she learns she has choices.
“They used you to prove their control system,” Ava said.
Lena looked ashamed.
“I stayed longer than I should have.”

Marisol asked where the gym equipment went after closure.
Lena contacted the former owner.

The boxing gloves were purchased in a bulk lot by a youth sports charity.
Ava recognized the charity.
Her company had supplied therapists there.
They drove to the warehouse that evening.
Rows of donated equipment filled the building.
After two hours, Lena found a faded blue glove with a torn wrist strap.
Her hands shook as she cut open the lining.
The flash drive was still there.
Inside were spreadsheets, emails, and scanned inspection reports.
One document linked Victoria directly to a judge who had dismissed Lena’s first protection complaint.
Another showed payments to a police supervisor after Marisol reported being locked in the guest room.
The Coles had not only manipulated public opinion.
They had purchased silence inside the justice system.
Detective Warren immediately transferred the evidence to a federal corruption unit.
But one folder was encrypted.
Its title contained only a date.
The date Ethan’s father died.
Ethan had always said his father died in a boating accident.
Lena stared at the screen.
“He did not drown accidentally.”
