Chapter 1 - The First Rule

The belt sliced through the air where Ava’s face had been a second earlier.

She twisted aside.

The leather buckle struck the back of the white sofa with a violent crack.

Their honeymoon suitcases were still open on the penthouse floor. A sunhat from Santorini hung from one bag. Ethan’s expensive wedding jacket lay across a chair.

Three hours earlier, they had returned home smiling for the building staff.

Now Ethan stood in front of his new wife with a leather belt wrapped around one fist.

“Time to learn the rules.”

Ava’s red traveling dress slipped from her shoulders and fell to the polished wood floor.

Ethan stopped.

Beneath it, she wore black-and-red MMA training gear.

Her hands were already wrapped.

Protective gloves covered her knuckles.

Her feet planted firmly beneath her.

She was no longer backing toward the wall.

“Perfect timing,” she said.

Ethan stared at her.

For one brief moment, the confidence left his face.

Then humiliation replaced it.

“You think this is funny?”

He raised the belt again.

Ava lifted her gloves.

“No.”

He swung toward her head.

She stepped inside the arc before the leather could gather force, caught his wrist, turned her hips, and drove one controlled kick into his upper body.

Ethan stumbled sideways and crashed against the coffee table.

The belt fell from his hand.

No blood.

No dramatic scream.

Only the hard sound of a man losing his balance and the shocked breath of someone who had expected no resistance.

Ava remained between him and the hallway.

“You made a mistake.”

Ethan pushed himself onto one hand.

His eyes moved toward the gym bag on the dining table.

A phone inside it glowed.

The hallway camera outside the apartment blinked red.

Ethan’s face changed.

“Turn that off.”

Ava removed one glove and touched the phone.

His own voice filled the penthouse.

“You don’t question me. You obey.”

Ethan began crawling toward the table.

Ava stepped in front of the bag.

The doorbell rang.

A shadow appeared through the frosted glass beside the entrance.

Ava looked at Ethan.

“Now we have witnesses.”

Three heavy knocks shook the door.

Ethan’s fear deepened when a man outside called his full name.

👉 Ethan had thought the recording was the trap—but the people waiting outside knew what he had done long before the honeymoon.
