Chapter 5 - The Video He Intended to Use

Detective Warren asked everyone to remain in the living room.
A digital crimes officer arrived and examined the penthouse network.
Within twenty minutes, she found three hidden cameras.
One faced the bed.
One faced the dressing area.
The third pointed toward the doorway from a low angle.
Ethan had installed them before the honeymoon.
Ava felt exposed even though she had spent only a few hours in the apartment after returning.
The officer opened the local storage folder.
Several clips were labeled with Ava’s name.
The first showed her entering the bedroom and discovering Ethan reading messages on her phone.
The clip began after he had taken the phone.
It showed Ava trying to retrieve it.
Without context, she looked aggressive.
Another clip showed Ethan sitting calmly while Ava raised her voice.
The recording had no sound.
It did not capture him telling her that marriage gave him ownership of every private conversation.
Ethan folded his arms.
“She has anger problems.”
Lena whispered, “That is what he did to me.”
The final recording had been created less than an hour before the belt attack.
It showed Ava changing into MMA gear behind a partially closed bathroom door.
Ethan had recorded her preparation.
He smiled at Detective Warren.
“She dressed for a fight.”
Ava’s attorney, Lena’s legal advocate who had arrived with her, spoke for the first time.
“She dressed for protection after receiving credible warnings.”
Ethan pointed at the screen.
“She kicked me.”
“After you swung a belt.”
“Can she prove I intended to hit her?”
The digital officer looked toward the phone streaming to the cloud.
“The audio may.”
Ava unlocked the recording.
Ethan’s voice played:
“When I raise this belt, you will stand still.”
Then Ava’s voice:
“Put it down.”
Then Ethan:
“You will learn faster if you stop moving.”
The room became silent.
The belt strike followed.
The microphone captured the buckle hitting the sofa.
Detective Warren faced Ethan.
“You are under arrest for assault and attempted coercion.”
Ethan did not resist when the officer cuffed him.
He only looked at Ava.
“This marriage is over.”
Ava held his stare.
“It ended when you mistook a wedding license for ownership.”
As Warren led him toward the door, Ethan stopped.
“My mother owns this apartment.”
Ava said nothing.
“She owns your company’s largest contract too.”
That made Ava’s attorney look up.
Ethan smiled again.
