“I can end this.”
Ava said nothing.
“I will give you full ownership of the company agreement.”

“You should tell the truth because it is the truth.”
His jaw tightened.
“You always did that.”
“Did what?”
“Made everything sound simple.”
“Not hurting people is simple.”
“You do not understand my mother.”
“I understand that you became her whenever control mattered more than another person.”
Ethan looked away.
For the first time, he seemed ashamed.
But then he returned to the bargain.
“If you tell prosecutors the kick injured me badly, they may reduce the lake charge in exchange for my testimony.”
Ava stared at him.
“You want me to exaggerate evidence to help you.”
“You owe me after what you did.”
The old Ethan was still there.
Even in jail, even after losing everything, he believed consequences were a debt others owed him.
Ava ended the call.
