Chapter 9 - The House Begins to Move
Beckett did not panic immediately.
He opened a bottle of whiskey and called Dr. Mercer.
“Claire is with her mother.”
“Then file the emergency petition before she reaches a hospital.”
“She’s already at one.”
Mercer swore.
Judge Voss answered his private number and agreed to review the petition before dawn.
Sheriff Gannon offered to send deputies to Margaret’s home for a welfare check.
Each call was intercepted under an emergency authorization based on Claire’s evidence and the active corruption file.
Attorney General Reid listened from the command center.
The network began revealing itself without anyone forcing it.
Beckett contacted the foundation’s technology director.
“Delete the contingency folders.”
The director refused.
Beckett threatened his family.
Minutes later, the director called state investigators and offered access to the full server.
Gannon ordered a deputy to rewrite Claire’s earlier station visit as a voluntary mental-health consultation.
The deputy preserved the original log and contacted internal affairs.
Judge Voss drafted an emergency order declaring Claire temporarily incapable of making medical or financial decisions.
He signed it without speaking to her, reviewing independent medical evidence, or disclosing his personal relationship with the Hale family.
Dr. Mercer submitted the false evaluation.
By sunrise, the conspiracy had produced fresh evidence in real time.
The state team could have arrested several participants immediately.
Reid waited.
“Why?” Claire asked from her hospital room.
Margaret explained.
“They know they’re exposed, but they don’t know how much we have. People reveal their deepest connections when they think they still have time to protect themselves.”
Claire looked uneasy.
“You used to do this?”
“Yes.”
“Were you ever afraid?”
“Every time.”
Claire studied her mother differently.
Margaret had always seemed calm because Claire had never seen what calmness cost her.
At 6:40 a.m., Beckett’s father called from Florida.
Silas Hale had not spoken directly to his son in weeks.
Now he ordered Beckett to bring him the ledger drive.
Beckett claimed Claire had taken it.
Silas responded with four words.
Find Margaret Dawson first.
Beckett went silent.
“Who?”
“The investigator.”
Beckett looked toward the snow beyond his windows.
For the first time, he understood that Claire’s quiet mother was not an irrelevant witness.
