Chapter 13 - The Photograph Beckett Sent
Beckett sent Claire an old photograph.
It showed Margaret meeting Silas Hale outside a courthouse twenty-three years earlier.
The image made the encounter look private.
Beneath it, Beckett wrote:
Ask your mother what she traded to close the case.
Claire stared at the photograph.
Margaret had told her the investigation was buried by powerful officials.
Beckett wanted her to believe Margaret had participated.
He sent a second document.
It appeared to be a payment authorization carrying Margaret’s initials.
Claire confronted her mother that evening.
“Did Silas pay you?”
Margaret did not become defensive.
“No.”
“Did you meet him privately?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He offered to protect you and your father if I signed the closing memorandum.”
Claire’s breathing changed.
“What did you do?”
“I wore a wire.”
Margaret opened the old evidence archive.
The photograph had been taken during a controlled meeting authorized by Thomas Reid’s former supervisor.
Silas offered Margaret money, a promotion, and protection.
When she refused, he described Claire’s school route and James’s work schedule.
The recording should have supported obstruction charges.
Instead, a senior prosecutor removed it from the official file.
Margaret preserved a lawful copy.
The payment authorization Beckett sent was not money received by Margaret.
It was Silas’s handwritten proposal.
Her initials marked it as evidence.
Beckett had cropped the document.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“You asked a fair question.”
“I believed him for one second.”
“That is what he has trained you to do—doubt the safest person in the room.”
Margaret did not ask Claire to trust her blindly.
She let her examine the full file.
Every authorization.
Every date.
Every chain-of-custody signature.
That openness mattered more than reassurance.
Claire discovered something else in the recording transcript.
Silas had mentioned an internal Hale account called Winter Crown.
The same name appeared on Beckett’s modern ledger.
Winter Crown held money diverted from public housing projects, foundation grants, and land seizures.
Its estimated current value exceeded $190 million.
The account was controlled through a trust in the Cayman Islands.
Beckett had not merely inherited wealth from his father’s crimes.
He had continued adding to it.
Evelyn’s account key could expose the entire trail.
Federal analysts opened the hollow compartment in her husband’s desk.
Inside was a handwritten code and a small cassette recording.
Evelyn had secretly recorded Silas ordering payments to the Granite Circle.
One additional voice appeared on the tape.
The voice belonged to a young Beckett Hale.
