Chapter 2 - The Husband Everyone Admired
Three years earlier, Beckett Hale had seemed impossible to distrust.
He was handsome, articulate, and generous in ways people could easily see.
He funded school renovations.
He sponsored winter shelters.
His family development company restored historic buildings throughout New England.
When Claire first introduced him to Margaret, Beckett arrived carrying flowers and a pie from Margaret’s favorite bakery.
He listened when Margaret spoke.
He helped wash dishes without being asked.
He called Claire “the smartest person in every room.”
Margaret remained polite but reserved.
“You don’t like him,” Claire said afterward.
“I don’t know him yet.”
“He makes me happy.”
“Then I hope he keeps doing that.”
Claire worked as a forensic accountant for a regional insurance company. She was careful, independent, and accustomed to finding patterns hidden inside numbers.
Beckett said those qualities were what attracted him.
After their wedding, he encouraged her to leave the insurance firm and become financial director of the Hale Family Foundation.
“You’ll have more influence,” he promised. “And we’ll finally work as a team.”
Claire accepted.
At first, the new life felt extraordinary.
They moved into the Hale family’s lakefront mansion.
Claire attended charity dinners and development conferences.
Beckett introduced her to judges, police officials, and state legislators.
Everyone seemed to admire him.
Yet certain subjects changed the room.
Whenever Claire asked how the foundation selected contractors, conversations ended.
When she questioned why donations passed through consulting companies, Beckett told her she was reading ordinary business expenses as if they were crimes.
His mother had died years earlier.
His father, Silas Hale, lived mostly in Florida but remained chairman of Hale Dominion Development.
Silas called Claire “the numbers girl.”
He never used her actual title.
Margaret met Silas only once at the wedding.
The moment she heard his name, her hand tightened around her glass.
Claire noticed.
“Do you know him?”
Margaret looked across the reception hall at the older man surrounded by political donors.
“I know the kind of man he used to be.”
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing you need to carry today.”
Claire assumed her mother was being protective.
She did not know Margaret had spent six years investigating Silas Hale before Claire graduated from high school.
She did not know witnesses had vanished, evidence had been buried, and Margaret’s career had nearly ended because she refused to close the case.
