Chapter 16 - Beckett’s Last Bargain
Beckett requested a meeting through his attorneys.
Claire agreed only with prosecutors, Margaret, and her lawyer present.
He entered the secure conference room wearing jail clothing beneath a suit jacket.
Without the mansion, staff, and political friends around him, he looked smaller.
“You seem well,” he said.
Claire did not answer.
Beckett placed a settlement proposal on the table.
He would surrender his claim to marital property.
He would identify offshore accounts.
He would testify against Silas.
In return, Claire would state that she voluntarily remained at the mansion during their disputes and that the lockout had been a temporary separation after an argument.
“You want me to erase the abuse,” Claire said.
“I want accuracy.”
“You threw me barefoot into a snowstorm.”
“You walked outside.”
“Ana’s video shows you pushing me.”
“You were trying to steal foundation property.”
“I was preserving evidence.”
Beckett leaned forward.
“You think your mother saved you because she is heroic? She used you to reopen the case she lost.”
Margaret remained silent.
Claire looked at Beckett.
“My mother tried to persuade me to leave before she knew what evidence I had.”
“She hates my family.”
“She gave me every document when I questioned her. You created documents to make me question myself.”
His expression tightened.
Claire pushed the settlement back.
“No.”
“You could lose years in court.”
“Then I’ll spend years telling the truth.”
“You’ll be known as the abused wife of Beckett Hale.”
“For a while.”
“And after that?”
Claire thought of the forensic ledger, her former career, and the women whose complaints had been buried.
“After that, I’ll decide who I am.”
Beckett looked toward Margaret.
“You should have stayed retired.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“You should have asked why I retired.”
Beckett’s plea offer failed.
Two weeks later, Silas agreed to testify against several political officials but refused to testify against his son.
Beckett refused to testify against Silas.
Their loyalty was not love.
Each feared becoming the lowest person in the hierarchy.
Then Evelyn Marsh entered the grand jury room.
She identified both voices on the cassette and decoded the Winter Crown ledger.
The offshore account opened fully.
Funds were seized.
Families defrauded decades earlier were finally identified.
