Chapter 12 - The Psychiatric Trap
While Silas and Beckett were questioned, Judge Voss issued the emergency order declaring Claire mentally incapacitated.
He sent county deputies to Margaret’s home.
The order named Beckett as Claire’s temporary decision-maker.
It authorized him to move her to a private psychiatric facility operated by one of Dr. Mercer’s business partners.
The deputies arrived expecting an ordinary widow and a frightened patient.
They found state investigators, hospital counsel, and Attorney General Reid.
Margaret read the order.
“It was signed after Voss learned Claire was a witness.”
One deputy quietly removed his hand from his radio.
The other insisted they were required to act.
Reid showed them the federal preservation notice and the independent hospital evaluation confirming Claire was alert, competent, and receiving treatment for exposure and trauma.
The order was suspended.
Judge Voss was arrested in his chambers before noon.
Dr. Mercer attempted to delete Claire’s draft medical file.
Investigators recovered earlier versions from his cloud account.
The documents showed he had prepared the diagnosis months before Beckett locked Claire outside.
Household employees had been pressured to sign statements describing normal disagreements as paranoia.
One refused.
Her name was Ana Morales, the Hale housekeeper.
Ana told investigators she had seen Beckett lock Claire in rooms and take her phone.
She had also preserved security footage from the night Claire was forced outside.
Beckett believed he had deleted it.
Ana copied the video before leaving the mansion.
The recording showed Beckett dragging Claire toward the door.
It captured her asking for shoes.
It captured him throwing them into the yard and saying:
Maybe the cold will teach you what happens when you steal from me.
The footage also showed Sheriff Gannon entering through the garage forty minutes later.
Gannon did not ask where Claire was.
He helped Beckett search the house for the encrypted drive.
Claire watched only part of the video.
Then she turned away.
Margaret stopped the playback immediately.
“You don’t owe anyone your pain twice.”
The recordings, forged order, and false psychiatric file transformed the case.
It was no longer possible to dismiss Claire as an angry spouse.
The same network protecting Hale financial crimes had been mobilized to imprison her medically and legally.
Sheriff Gannon was arrested at the county station.
Dr. Mercer was taken into custody at his clinic.
But Beckett remained temporarily free while prosecutors prepared the larger conspiracy charges.
He used that time to call Claire from an unknown number.
“You’ve destroyed everything.”
