Claire accessed the foundation server through an old accounting terminal Beckett believed had been disconnected.
Inside a hidden directory, she found a payment ledger labeled COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.
The entries were not charitable grants.
They were purchases of loyalty.
Sheriff Gannon received payments through his brother’s consulting firm.
Judge Malcolm Voss received renovation work on a private vacation home.
Dr. Stephen Mercer, a psychiatrist, received monthly retainers despite treating no foundation clients.
A local newspaper owner received advertising contracts after killing a story about Hale land acquisitions.
Claire copied the ledger onto an encrypted drive.
Then she opened a second folder.
It contained complaints against Hale Dominion Development.
Families claimed the company forced them from valuable land.
Former employees described intimidation.
Three women accused senior Hale executives of abuse.
Every complaint ended the same way.
Withdrawn.
Unsubstantiated.

One name appeared beside a confidential settlement.
Rebecca Sloan.
Claire remembered Rebecca.
She had worked as Beckett’s executive assistant before leaving suddenly.
Beckett claimed she stole company information.
The files showed Dr. Mercer diagnosed Rebecca with paranoid delusions shortly after she accused Beckett of assault.
Sheriff Gannon closed her complaint.
Judge Voss sealed the records.
Claire’s stomach turned.
The system surrounding Beckett had existed before their marriage.
She searched her own name.
A folder was already there.
CLAIRE HALE—CONTINGENCY.
Inside were draft medical notes.
Statements from household staff describing her as anxious and obsessive.
A petition authorizing Beckett to control her finances during a mental-health emergency.
Dr. Mercer’s unsigned evaluation claimed Claire suffered from paranoid personality disorder.
He had never examined her.
The petition also allowed temporary transfer of her foundation voting authority.
Beckett was preparing to use the same method against her that he had used against Rebecca.
Claire photographed every page.
The terminal beeped.
Someone had logged into the server remotely.
She removed the drive and returned the screen to its original state.
Minutes later, Beckett called.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Stay there.”
The calmness in his voice frightened her more than shouting.
Claire slipped the drive into the hem of her winter coat.
She texted Margaret a single sentence.
I found proof, but he knows.
Margaret replied immediately.
Leave now.
Claire reached the garage.
The door would not open.
