Chapter 8 - THE EMERGENCY PETITION
The deputies did not take Lucas.
The order required Natalie to appear before a judge within twenty-four hours.
Until then, both parents were prohibited from removing the baby from the county.
Adrian had requested immediate sole custody.
Judge Mercer refused to grant it without testimony from Lucas’s pediatrician.
That refusal saved Natalie.
Adrian returned home acting devastated.
“I didn’t want this.”
“You filed the petition.”
“I had no choice.”
“You exposed our son to a sedative.”
His expression changed for only a second.
Then he smiled sadly.
“This is exactly what Dr. Keller warned about. Paranoia.”
Margaret stood behind him.
Natalie understood their strategy.
Any accusation she made would become another symptom.
She did not reveal the camera footage.
Instead, she allowed Rachel to arrange a safe departure under police supervision.
Natalie and Lucas moved into a protected apartment connected to a women’s legal-support program.
Dr. Park submitted a statement confirming that Lucas was healthy in Natalie’s care and that no evidence supported a history of prenatal substance use.
A court-appointed nurse visited twice daily.
Natalie agreed to every test.
Her blood and urine remained clean.
Adrian told reporters that his wife had entered a “private recovery residence.”
He released a statement asking the public to respect the family’s pain.
Margaret contacted Natalie’s friends.
She said Natalie was ashamed and did not want visitors.
Within two days, social media photographs appeared showing Adrian holding Lucas’s empty bassinet inside the mansion.
The caption read:
A father waiting for his son to come home.
People sent him sympathy.
Natalie received messages calling her selfish, dangerous, and ungrateful.
She almost stopped reading.
Then an old college friend, Tessa Morgan, called.
“I don’t believe him.”
Tessa had lived with Natalie for three years.
She had never seen her misuse medication.
More importantly, Tessa remembered Adrian asking strange questions during the pregnancy.
He wanted to know whether Natalie had ever taken anxiety medication in college.
He asked whether she had a family history of addiction.
At the time, Tessa thought he was being protective.
Now she realized he had been collecting details to build a believable story.
Tessa agreed to testify.
Other friends followed.
A former housekeeper reported that Margaret once asked where Natalie stored her handbags and medication.
A driver remembered taking Adrian to Dr. Keller’s office three weeks before Lucas’s birth.
The red folder grew thicker.
Then Rachel obtained pharmacy records.
Adrian had filled a prescription for the same sedative found in Natalie and Lucas.
The prescription was issued in Adrian’s name.
Three days later, he reported the bottle lost.
The pharmacy replaced it.
