Chapter 13 - THE LAST OFFER

The night before the hearing, Margaret came to the protected apartment.
She could not enter the building.
Security called Natalie from the lobby.
“Mrs. Vale says she has information about your husband.”
Rachel advised Natalie not to meet her alone.
They spoke through a glass conference wall with security present.
Margaret wore her pearls.
Even then, she dressed as though photographers might appear.
“I can stop Adrian,” she said.
Natalie remained standing.
“You helped him.”
“I protected my family.”
“You exposed Lucas to a sedative.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
“Adrian assured me there was no danger.”
“You believed him because the money mattered more than the risk.”
“The company employs thousands.”
“My son is not a company asset.”
Margaret placed an envelope against the glass.
Inside was a proposed agreement.
She would testify that Adrian acted alone.
In return, Natalie would withdraw her complaint against Margaret and allow Vale Custodial Services to receive a smaller management contract.
“You still want Lucas’s money.”
“I want stability.”
Natalie almost laughed.
Margaret had entered the apartment building after midnight to bargain over the baby she helped endanger.
“You called me weak,” Natalie said.
“I called you ill.”
“You created the illness.”
Margaret lowered her voice.
“You cannot raise Lucas while fighting every Vale in court.”
“There will be fewer Vales to fight after tomorrow.”
Margaret’s expression changed.
She understood Natalie possessed more evidence than Adrian had disclosed.
“Did Keller talk?”
Natalie said nothing.
Margaret looked toward the red folder beneath Rachel’s hand.
Then she asked the question that confirmed everything.
“Do you have the kitchen footage?”
Rachel ended the meeting.
The following morning, Margaret joined Adrian in court rather than accepting responsibility.
She stood behind him in pearls.
She smiled when Natalie entered carrying Lucas.
Adrian whispered something to his attorney.
Then he said loudly, “She brought a prop.”
Natalie continued toward the judge.
She placed the red folder on the bench.
“Your Honor, this baby is not why I need protection.”
Mara—no, Margaret—watched Natalie open the folder.
The confidence left her face page by page.
The clean birth toxicology.
The later blood result.
The bottle analysis.
The false rehabilitation intake.
The pharmacy records.
The forged trust agreement.
The security-video transcripts.
The bank transfers.
The settlement offer Margaret delivered the night before.
Judge Mercer looked directly at her.
“You attempted to negotiate a financial contract involving this child after learning the court had concerns about drug exposure?”
Margaret touched her necklace.
“I was trying to preserve the family.”
The judge’s expression became colder.
May you like
“Whose family?”
👉 Margaret had entered court certain that status would protect her, but her midnight settlement offer proved she was still trying to profit from Lucas after the scheme was exposed.
