Chapter 14 - HE IS THE PROOF
Judge Mercer ordered the courtroom cleared of unnecessary spectators.
The reporter was permitted to remain because the hearing had already been opened publicly at Adrian’s request.
Natalie stood beside Rachel with Lucas sleeping against her.
Dr. Park testified first.
“At birth, Lucas showed no evidence of prenatal exposure to the substance later found in his blood.”
Adrian’s new attorney asked whether Natalie could have consumed it after delivery.
“Yes,” Dr. Park said. “But the evidence does not establish voluntary consumption.”
The attorney pointed toward Lucas.
“Could the substance have passed through breast milk?”
“It could. It was also found directly in the bottle collected at the hospital.”
Dr. Park explained that the bottle had been prepared during a period when Adrian alone claimed to have handled feeding.
Adrian shifted in his chair.
The forensic toxicologist testified next.
The sedative found in Natalie’s tea matched the medication prescribed to Adrian.
The bottle residue matched it too.
The tablets planted in Natalie’s purse came from the same manufacturer and production batch as Adrian’s replacement prescription.
Then Rachel played the restored security footage.
Margaret entered Natalie’s room.
Adrian photographed her unconscious.
The pills appeared in her purse.
The library meeting with Dr. Keller followed.
“She has a history of trusting me.”
The words filled the courtroom.
Adrian stopped looking at Natalie.
Rachel placed Lucas’s clean birth report beside the later toxicology.
“This child is not a prop,” she said. “He is the timeline.”
Before Lucas came home, Natalie’s records were clean.
After Adrian and Margaret controlled her food, drinks, medicine, and access to medical care, both mother and child tested positive.
When Natalie moved into protected housing, every test returned clean.
Lucas remained healthy.
The evidence did not show an addicted mother endangering her child.
It showed a mother and child repeatedly exposed inside Adrian’s home.
Judge Mercer turned toward Adrian.
“Mr. Vale, did you disclose your prescription to the hospital?”
His attorney stood.
“My client invokes his right not to answer because a criminal investigation may be pending.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
The judge looked toward the two officers.
They had entered before Natalie arrived.
Adrian finally noticed they were not courthouse security.
Judge Mercer issued an immediate protective order granting Natalie sole temporary custody.
Adrian and Margaret were prohibited from contacting her or Lucas.
Vale Capital received no authority over the trust.
Then the judge addressed the officers.
“I believe you have business with the respondents.”
One detective approached Adrian.
“Adrian Vale, stand and place your hands behind your back.”
Margaret gasped.
Adrian looked at Natalie.
“You planned this.”
Natalie held Lucas closer.

“No. You did.”
👉 Adrian had expected to leave court controlling Lucas’s trust, but he walked out in handcuffs while the baby remained safely in Natalie’s arms.
