Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED UNSTABLE
The criminal trial began nine months later.
Lucas was almost one.
Natalie entered the courtroom alone.
Rachel handled the family case, but prosecutors led the criminal charges.
Adrian sat beside his attorneys in a dark suit.
Margaret sat at a separate defense table.
They no longer looked united.
Adrian’s attorney described him as a desperate father manipulated by an overbearing mother.
Margaret’s attorney described her as a grandmother misled by her son.
Each tried to place the entire scheme on the other.
Dr. Keller testified that both of them knew the report was false.
The pharmacy records showed Adrian collected both bottles of sedative personally.
The security videos showed Margaret participating.
The financial documents showed both would profit from Lucas’s trust.
Then Natalie took the stand.
Adrian’s attorney approached carefully.
“Mrs. Vale, you cried frequently after childbirth.”
“Yes.”
“You experienced memory gaps.”
“Yes.”
“You sometimes felt unable to stand.”
“Yes.”
“Those can be signs of substance abuse.”
“They can also be signs that someone put a sedative in your drink.”
The attorney changed direction.
“You believed your husband was conspiring against you.”
“I did not begin with a belief. I began with a laboratory report.”
“You accused his mother too.”
“The camera recorded her.”
“You secretly collected evidence.”
“After my baby was hospitalized.”
“You refused residential treatment.”
“For an addiction I did not have.”
The attorney displayed a video of Natalie crying on the bathroom floor.
“Do you appear stable here?”
Natalie looked at the screen.
Adrian had recorded her after she woke confused and frightened.
“No,” she said.
The attorney smiled slightly.
Natalie continued.
“I appear drugged.”
The prosecutor then played what happened before the clip.
Adrian entered with the prescription bottle.
Margaret waited outside.
Twelve minutes later, Adrian called her.
“She’s down.”
The attorney returned to his seat.
On redirect, the prosecutor asked Natalie why she brought Lucas to the custody hearing.
“Because Adrian spent weeks using my child as the reason no one should believe me.”
She looked toward the jury.
“I wanted the court to see that Lucas was not evidence against me. His medical records were evidence against them.”
The final witness was the Vale Capital accountant.
She explained the $4.8 million deadline and the forged trust agreement.
The prosecution displayed Adrian’s message to Margaret.
ONCE CUSTODY IS TEMPORARY, THE TRUST WILL RELEASE.
Adrian closed his eyes.
