Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE PANTRY
The Vale estate contained twenty-three security cameras.
Adrian controlled the main system.
After Lucas’s hospital visit, several hours of footage disappeared.
Adrian said a software update caused the loss.
Natalie contacted the company directly.
The account representative refused to speak with her because Adrian was listed as administrator.
Then Natalie remembered the nursery camera.
It was not connected to the main estate system.
Her father had given it to her during pregnancy, before he died unexpectedly from a stroke.
The camera stored clips in a separate cloud account.
Its wide-angle view included the nursery door and part of the hallway leading toward the pantry.
Natalie reviewed the archive while Adrian slept.
At 4:37 a.m. on the morning Lucas became ill, Margaret entered the pantry carrying a prepared bottle.
She looked over her shoulder.
Then she reached toward a shelf outside the camera’s view.
Thirty seconds later, Adrian appeared.
The audio was faint.
Natalie increased the volume.
Margaret said, “This has to be the last time.”
Adrian replied, “One hospital report is not enough for emergency custody.”
“You said it wouldn’t harm the baby.”
“It won’t if the amount is small.”
Natalie stopped the video.
Her hands became numb.
She had expected proof of manipulation.
She had not expected to hear them discuss Lucas’s exposure as a strategy.
The next clip showed Adrian carrying the bottle toward the nursery.
Margaret remained in the hallway.
“She’ll never forgive you if she learns the truth.”
Adrian answered, “She won’t be in a position to matter.”
Natalie saved copies to three secure accounts.
She sent one to Rachel.
She sent another to Dr. Park.
She stored the third with the security company’s legal department.
Then she watched the earlier footage.
Two nights before Natalie collapsed in the bathroom, Margaret entered her bedroom carrying a glass of water.
Adrian stood at the door.
The camera did not show what happened inside.
But twelve minutes later, Adrian called Margaret.
“She’s down.”
Margaret replied, “Take the picture before you move her.”
Natalie had spent days wondering whether postpartum exhaustion had damaged her memory.
Now she knew her confusion had been manufactured.
She also knew Adrian and Margaret were willing to risk Lucas’s life to create evidence against her.
At sunrise, Natalie packed a diaper bag and the red folder.
She waited until Adrian left for the office.
Then she attempted to leave with Lucas.
Margaret stood inside the front entrance.
“Where are you going?”
“To the pediatrician.”
“I’ll drive.”
“No.”
Margaret looked at the diaper bag.
Then at Natalie’s face.
“You’ve found something.”
Natalie’s heart pounded.
Before she could answer, two sheriff’s deputies entered through the open door.
Adrian had filed an emergency petition before leaving the house.
