Chapter 4 - THE BABY WHO WOULD NOT WAKE

Lucas was eleven days old when he stopped waking for feedings.

Natalie had nursed him shortly after midnight.

At four in the morning, Adrian took him downstairs so she could sleep.

When Natalie woke, sunlight filled the bedroom.

It was nearly ten.

She ran to the nursery.

Lucas lay in his bassinet, breathing but unusually still.

She touched his cheek.

“Lucas?”

He did not react.

Natalie screamed.

Adrian appeared already dressed.

Margaret followed him.

“What happened?” Natalie demanded.

“He drank a bottle at five,” Adrian said. “Then he slept.”

“He never sleeps this long.”

Adrian lifted the baby.

Lucas’s head fell against his arm without resistance.

They rushed to the hospital.

A pediatric team began testing immediately.

Natalie stood beside the crib, shaking.

Adrian spoke privately with the doctor.

Then a hospital social worker entered.

She asked Natalie whether she had taken medication before breastfeeding.

“No.”

“Your husband says pills were found in your purse.”

“They were planted.”

Adrian closed his eyes as though her answer confirmed something terrible.

The doctor returned.

“A sedative was detected in Lucas’s blood.”

Natalie grabbed the crib rail.

“No.”

Adrian turned toward the social worker.

“I told you she was using again.”

Natalie stared at him.

“Again?”

He had transformed a lie about hidden addiction into accepted history.

Margaret began crying.

“My grandson could have died.”

Natalie felt the room closing around her.

Then Dr. Elena Park, the attending pediatrician, entered carrying Lucas’s birth records.

“Mrs. Vale, your son’s umbilical-cord toxicology at delivery was negative,” she said.

Adrian interrupted.

“That was eleven days ago.”

Dr. Park looked at him.

“Yes. Which means there is no evidence of drug exposure during pregnancy.”

The social worker glanced toward Adrian.

He had claimed Natalie used medication throughout the final trimester.

The records contradicted him.

Dr. Park continued.

“The level in Lucas’s blood is low. We expect him to recover fully. But we need to know what he consumed in the last twelve hours.”

Natalie had breastfed him once.

Adrian had given him one bottle of pumped milk.

Margaret had prepared the bottle warmer.

Adrian’s expression remained calm.

Natalie’s did not.

“I want every bottle tested.”

Margaret shook her head.

“This is hysteria.”

“I want them tested.”

Dr. Park agreed.

Security collected the bottle, warmer, and remaining milk from the insulated bag Adrian brought from home.

The social worker temporarily restricted both parents from feeding Lucas without supervision.

Adrian objected loudly.

Natalie did not.

She remained beside the crib until Lucas opened his eyes.

When his tiny fingers closed around hers, she made a silent promise.

She would stop doubting herself before someone’s lie killed her child.

Before discharge, Dr. Park quietly gave Natalie copies of the clean birth toxicology and the new laboratory report.

“Keep these somewhere your husband cannot access,” she whispered.

👉 Lucas recovered, but the difference between his clean birth screening and his later exposure gave Natalie the first evidence that the danger had begun inside the Vale estate.
