Chapter 17 - THE PRICE OF THE LIE
The jury deliberated for two days.
Adrian was convicted on the major charges involving conspiracy, fraud, nonconsensual drug exposure, child endangerment, and falsified medical records.
Margaret was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, and attempted theft.
Dr. Keller received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation, but he lost his medical license permanently and was ordered to pay restitution.
At sentencing, Adrian’s attorneys presented photographs of him holding Lucas at birth.
They described a father who had made catastrophic choices under financial pressure.
Natalie listened without interrupting.
Then she stood.
“Financial pressure did not make Adrian photograph me unconscious.”
Adrian looked at her.
“It did not make him place pills in my purse. It did not make him expose Lucas to a substance so a hospital would believe I caused it.”
Her voice remained calm.
“He did those things because he believed being respected was the same as being believed. For a while, he was right.”
Margaret cried during her statement.
She said Vale Capital represented generations of family sacrifice.
The judge answered, “A newborn child was not required to sacrifice for your company.”
Adrian received a lengthy prison sentence.
Margaret received a substantial sentence as well.
Both were ordered to pay restitution for Natalie’s medical, legal, and security costs.
Vale Custodial Services was dissolved.
The forged loan against Lucas’s trust was declared unenforceable.
Vale Capital survived only after the board sold the waterfront project and removed every member of Margaret’s family office.
Thousands of employees kept their jobs.
Adrian’s claim that harming Natalie was necessary to save the company proved false.
The company was saved only after he lost control of it.
In family court, Natalie received sole legal and physical custody.
Adrian was denied contact while incarcerated.
Any future request would require extensive child-safety review after his release.
Margaret received no grandparent visitation.
The judge explained that biology did not create a right to enter a child’s life after deliberately endangering him.
The divorce decree returned Natalie’s inherited property and awarded damages for the assets Adrian attempted to conceal.
Natalie kept the Vale surname temporarily because changing every medical and legal document during the trial felt overwhelming.
A year later, she returned to Hayes.
Lucas became Lucas Michael Hayes.
She did not erase where he came from.
