Chapter 9 - MEADOW PINES
The conversation stretched back nearly eight months.
Jessica and Brittany had discussed the home’s value.
They had calculated the remaining property taxes.
They had estimated how much money would remain after paying off the fraudulent loan.
Then Martha found a link to a private care facility called Meadow Pines.
Brittany had written:
They accept residents with memory decline. Once the POA is active, she won’t have to agree.
Jessica responded:
She’ll fight at first. She always gives in when Ava is involved.
Martha lowered the tablet.
The betrayal was no longer about a car payment.
Jessica planned to remove her from her home, label her mentally unfit and use the property to erase her own debts.
Daniel wanted to contact the police immediately.
But Martha insisted on speaking with an attorney first.
The following morning, the Community Health Center connected her with Evelyn Brooks, an elder-law attorney who volunteered twice a month.
Evelyn read the messages in silence.
Then she examined the power of attorney.
“This document has serious defects,” she said. “The witness date is a Sunday, but Brittany’s notary log says it was signed inside her office. Her office is closed Sundays.”
She turned to another page.
“This is a draft deed transferring your home to an LLC.”
“What LLC?”
Evelyn typed the company name into a state database.
The registered agent was Brittany Cole.
The mailing address belonged to Jessica.
Martha felt sick.
Evelyn continued reviewing the tablet.
“The listing agreement says photographs will be taken Friday morning.”
“That’s tomorrow.”
“They planned to put your house on the market before you knew it was for sale.”
Martha thought of Brittany walking through each room, complimenting the natural light and measuring the backyard with her eyes.
Evelyn closed the folder.
“We need an emergency court order.”
“Will that stop them?”
“It will stop the sale. But to hold them accountable, we need proof they knowingly forged these documents.”
Martha looked at the tablet.
“There must be more.”
There was.
