Chapter 11 - THOMAS’S LAST GIFT
The $42,000 did not come from Martha’s pension.
It came from a certificate of deposit Thomas had opened twenty-two years earlier.
He called it their “never-touch money.”
It was meant for medical emergencies, major home repairs or the possibility that one of them needed long-term care.
After Thomas died, Martha renewed it and placed the paperwork in the file box Jessica later borrowed.
Jessica had used a forged withdrawal request to close the account.
The money funded hotel trips, designer handbags, Brittany’s real estate fees and a $7,500 cosmetic upgrade package for the sedan.
Martha stared at the transaction history.
Thomas had worked overtime for years to build that savings.
He had repaired factory equipment in heat that often reached one hundred degrees.
He came home with grease beneath his fingernails and pain in his back.
Jessica knew that.
She had watched him limp through the kitchen door.
And she spent his savings on leather seats and vacation photographs.
For the first time since the clinic, Martha broke down.
“I raised her,” she whispered. “How did I raise someone who could do this?”
Evelyn moved her chair closer.
“You raised someone who learned that your love had no boundaries. That does not make her choices your fault.”
Daniel placed the security footage, bank statements and tablet records into an evidence folder.
A financial-crimes detective opened an investigation.
The bank reversed several pending transfers, but the stolen funds could not be immediately recovered.
Martha then made a decision that frightened her.
She signed a formal statement revoking Jessica’s permission to use the sedan.
The detective contacted Jessica and ordered her to return it.
Jessica refused.
She claimed the car had been a gift.
But she made another mistake.
Instead of keeping quiet, she began a livestream from inside the sedan.
“My own mother is trying to steal my car,” she told hundreds of viewers.
