Chapter 10 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE PLAN
Ava arrived at Evelyn’s office after school.
Her father, Jessica’s former husband, had picked her up and brought her there after learning what happened.
Ava looked terrified.
“I don’t want Mom to go to jail.”
Martha pulled her granddaughter close.
“This is not your fault.”
Ava handed Evelyn a flash drive.
“I saved everything before Mom took the tablet.”
The restored audio file was thirty-seven minutes long.
Most of it contained background noise.
Then Brittany’s voice became clear.
“The clinic appointment is perfect. Make her feel dependent.”
Jessica laughed.
“She already is.”
“No. She still believes the car gives her leverage. Remind her that she can’t get home without you.”
“What if she threatens to take it back?”
“She won’t. Your mother would rather suffer than let anyone know you treat her badly.”
Martha pressed a hand over her mouth.
The rain had not been an impulsive act.
It had been a warning.
Jessica wanted her frightened, ashamed and convinced that resistance would leave her alone.
The recording continued.
After Martha’s house sold, Jessica planned to pay off nearly $40,000 in personal debt.
Brittany would receive a sales commission and partial ownership of a boutique they intended to open.
Then Jessica said something that made Ava begin to cry.
“Once Mom is at Meadow Pines, we’ll tell Ava the move was medically necessary.”
Ava whispered, “She was going to make me think you were sick.”
Evelyn paused the recording.
“That proves intent.”
But Ava shook her head.
“There’s another file.”
It was a screenshot of a message Jessica had sent the previous night.
Don’t worry about the loan being frozen. We still have the second account.
Martha looked at Evelyn.
“What second account?”
The attorney immediately called the bank’s fraud investigator.
Two hours later, they discovered an online checking account opened in Martha’s name eleven months earlier.
More than $42,000 had passed through it.
