Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE RAIN
“Take the bus, Mom.”
Jessica Higgins said it without looking at her mother.
The gray sedan rolled forward beside the curb of the Community Health Center. Its front tire sliced through a muddy puddle.
Dirty water exploded across Martha Higgins’s dress.
The sixty-eight-year-old woman stumbled backward, clutching her medication bag against her chest. Her old blue sweater was already soaked. Rain ran through her silver hair and down her trembling face.
In the passenger seat, Brittany Cole glanced at Martha’s torn sleeve and covered a laugh with one manicured hand.
Martha raised her palm.
“Jessica, wait.”
Her daughter lowered the window barely two inches.
“We’re already late,” Jessica snapped. “I told you not to schedule appointments when I have plans.”
Martha approached the driver’s door.
“It’s raining. My heart medication is in this bag.”
“You’ll survive.”
Jessica reached for the window button.
Martha pressed her hand against the wet glass.
“Jessica…it’s my car.”
For the first time, her daughter froze.
Brittany turned sharply.
“Wait. Your car?”
Martha opened the plastic folder beneath her medication. The edge of the registration appeared through the rain-streaked cover.
Owner: Martha Elaine Higgins.
Jessica’s face lost its color.
Inside the health center, security guard Daniel Ortiz had watched the entire scene on the entrance camera.
He zoomed in on the license plate.
Then he saved the footage.
Martha looked at the daughter she had spent forty-two years protecting.
“You forgot whose name is on it.”
Jessica stepped on the gas anyway.
The sedan disappeared into the rain.
But Martha did not chase it.
She walked back into the health center, borrowed Daniel’s phone, and called someone Jessica never expected.
Not the police.
Not a lawyer.
