Chapter 15 - THE CAR SHE REFUSED TO KEEP
The sedan arrived at Martha’s house on a tow truck.
Its polished gray body looked almost new.
The leather seats had been upgraded with Thomas’s stolen savings.
Jessica’s vanity plate still rested in the trunk.
Martha stood in the driveway with Ava.
“Are you going to drive it?” Ava asked.
Martha touched the hood.
For years, the car had represented her hope that Jessica would become responsible.
After the clinic, it represented control, shame and betrayal.
“No,” Martha said. “I don’t want to carry this with me.”
She sold it.
The proceeds paid off the remaining loan and covered part of the money lost through fraud.
With what remained, Martha bought a used blue compact car.
It was not luxurious.
But the title, registration and keys belonged only to her.
The dealership employee handed her the documents.
Martha checked every line before signing.
Then she drove herself to the Community Health Center.
Daniel was standing outside.
When he saw her behind the wheel, he grinned.
“Looks good on you.”
“It starts. It stops. And nobody can take it without my permission.”
“That sounds perfect.”
Martha’s health improved once her medication was stabilized.
Her doctor told her the irregular heartbeat was under control.
Ava began spending weekends at Martha’s house while Jessica’s case moved through the courts.
They cooked Thomas’s favorite chili.
They repaired the garden.
They talked honestly about what had happened.
Martha never asked Ava to choose between them.
“Your mother did something terrible,” she said. “But loving her does not make you disloyal to me.”
Ava began to cry.
“I thought you would hate me because I’m her daughter.”
Martha pulled her close.
“You’re also my granddaughter. Nothing she did changes that.”
Months later, prosecutors offered Jessica and Brittany separate plea agreements.
Both included prison time, restitution and permanent financial restrictions.
