Chapter 13 - THE LIE IN THE COURTROOM

The emergency hearing took place six days later.
Jessica arrived wearing a conservative navy dress.
She had hired an attorney and removed every photograph of Brittany from her social media pages.
Brittany sat on the opposite side of the courtroom with her own lawyer.
Their friendship had already begun to collapse.
Jessica’s attorney argued that Martha was elderly, emotionally unstable and confused about financial arrangements she had previously approved.
“She gave her daughter access willingly,” he said. “Now she regrets helping and is attempting to rewrite history.”
Jessica stared at Martha with practiced sadness.
“I only tried to protect my mother.”
Evelyn stood.
“By leaving her outside a medical clinic in freezing rain?”
The security video played.
The courtroom became silent.
Everyone watched Jessica lock the doors.
They watched the muddy water strike Martha.
They heard Brittany laugh.
They heard Martha say, “It’s my car.”
Then Evelyn presented the bank records, the forged signature and the messages about selling the house.
Jessica’s attorney claimed the messages were jokes taken out of context.
Evelyn played the audio recording.
Make her feel dependent.
She would rather suffer than let anyone know you treat her badly.
Jessica’s expression changed.
But she still did not surrender.
“My mother forgets things,” she told the judge. “She gave me permission.”
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Ava entered beside her father.
Jessica turned in shock.
Ava took the witness stand.
Her voice trembled, but she did not look away.
“My mom told me Grandma was moving because she had dementia. But Grandma never forgot anything. Mom said that by Monday, Grandma wouldn’t own anything on paper.”
Jessica whispered, “Ava, please.”
The judge sharply ordered her to remain silent.
Ava continued.
“She told me not to answer if Grandma called because Grandma needed to learn what being alone felt like.”

Martha lowered her head as tears reached her hands.
👉 Ava’s testimony destroyed Jessica’s story—but a forensic examiner was about to prove that Brittany had fabricated every legal protection they relied upon.
