Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT HE THREW OUT HIS SON’S BEAR

Claire refused to sign.

Ryan’s parents stood behind him.

Diane crossed her arms.

“You’ve embarrassed this family long enough.”

Claire looked at her.

“I just paid one hundred fifty thousand dollars to save your son.”

“You paid what a wife should pay.”

Maya walked upstairs.

Claire heard the bedroom door open.

“You are not going into my room,” Claire said.

Ryan blocked the staircase.

“It isn’t your room anymore.”

Claire reached for her phone.

Ryan grabbed it from her hand.

Noah appeared at the top of the stairs, awakened by the shouting.

“Mommy?”

Claire moved toward him.

Ryan caught her arm.

“Leave him here.”

Claire stared at her husband.

“You’re telling me to leave without my child?”

“He’s safer with me.”

Maya returned wearing Claire’s anniversary robe.

In one hand, she carried Claire’s suitcase.

She threw it down the stairs.

It struck the wall and burst open.

Clothes spilled across the floor.

Noah began crying.

Maya went back upstairs and returned with his small backpack, books, and stuffed bear.

She tossed them through the open front door.

The bear landed in the mud.

Claire pulled free from Ryan and ran to Noah.

She lifted him into her arms.

Ryan stepped between them and the door.

“You are not taking him.”

Claire activated the emergency button on her smartwatch.

The call connected silently to 911.

“Move,” she said.

“You have no money, no job, and nowhere to live.”

Ryan leaned close enough for Claire to smell champagne.

“You’ll bring him back by morning.”

Police sirens approached.

Maya’s expression changed.

Ryan released Claire’s arm.

Two officers arrived and found Noah sobbing, Claire’s belongings across the lawn, and Maya wearing Claire’s clothing.

Ryan immediately changed his tone.

“My wife is emotionally unstable. She threatened to take our son.”

One officer looked at the red marks on Claire’s arm.

“Did he touch you?”

“Yes.”

Ryan shook his head.

“She’s lying.”

Claire recovered her phone from the floor.

A message from Daniel appeared.

BANK FREEZE CONFIRMED. I’M COMING WITH THE EMERGENCY ORDER.

Ryan saw the message.

For the first time that evening, fear entered his eyes.

Claire carried Noah outside.

Ryan followed her onto the driveway.

When Daniel’s black sedan arrived, Ryan finally understood that Claire had not spent the last three weeks helplessly trusting him.
