Chapter 6 - THE PAYMENT

Claire initiated the transfer on Thursday morning.

Ryan stood beside her at the kitchen island.

He watched every number she entered.

Recipient: Northbridge Commercial Recovery.

Amount: $150,000.

Purpose: Loan settlement.

When the confirmation screen appeared, Ryan released a breath.

“Done,” Claire said.

He wrapped his arms around her.

“You have no idea what this means to me.”

Claire looked past his shoulder.

Maya’s car was parked across the street.

She had been waiting.

Ryan left for the office less than five minutes later.

Claire immediately called Daniel.

“The transfer is in the holding account,” she said.

“The fraud unit is watching it.”

“How much time do we have?”

“Until Monday morning, unless the receiving bank releases it early.”

Daniel had also requested corporate records from Northbridge.

The company’s hidden beneficiary would take longer to uncover.

Claire spent the day making quiet preparations.

She packed Noah’s medical documents, birth certificate, favorite clothes, and stuffed bear.

She stored the bags inside a locked cabinet in the garage.

She changed the passwords to her personal email and the cloud account containing Ryan’s recorded conversation.

She removed Evelyn’s jewelry from the bedroom safe.

That evening, Ryan opened champagne.

His parents arrived without being invited.

Diane embraced Claire for the first time in months.

“I knew you would do the right thing.”

Ryan’s father raised his glass.

“To family loyalty.”

Claire looked at the four smiling faces around the table.

They believed she had surrendered.

Maya arrived after Noah went to bed.

Ryan claimed she needed to deliver final loan documents.

She walked through the front door carrying an overnight bag.

Claire stared at it.

Maya smiled.

“I have an early meeting nearby.”

“There are hotels nearby.”

Ryan placed his hand on Claire’s shoulder.

“Don’t create drama after everything we’ve survived.”

Claire stepped away from him.

“What exactly have we survived, Ryan?”

His smile tightened.

“A financial crisis.”

“You mean the debt that was issued by a company that didn’t exist eighteen months ago?”

Silence fell across the room.

Ryan’s parents stopped drinking.

Maya’s eyes moved toward Ryan.

He recovered quickly.

“That is ridiculous.”

“I checked the registration.”

“You went behind my back?”

“You forged my signature.”

Ryan slammed his glass onto the table.

The stem broke.

“You think paying one bill gives you the right to accuse me of crimes?”

“No. The evidence gives me that right.”

Maya picked up her overnight bag.

“I’m leaving.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Stay.”

That single word ended the marriage.

Claire watched him choose Maya openly.

Ryan turned back to his wife.

“You want the truth? Fine. I’m done pretending this relationship works.”

He pulled folded divorce papers from his jacket.

“Sign them and get out.”

Claire looked at the documents.

Then at the mansion her grandmother had left her.

“You’re throwing me out of my own home?”

Ryan smiled.

May you like

“Not anymore.”

👉 Ryan believed the forged property document had made him owner of the mansion—but he had no idea Daniel had already obtained the original deed.
