Chapter 12 - THE REASON HE CHOSE HER
Maya’s recording began with music playing inside a hotel room.
Ryan sounded relaxed.
“You knew the arrangement.”
“I knew you were supposed to leave her,” Maya replied.
“I can’t leave until the property transfer is complete.”
“Why did you marry her in the first place?”
Ryan laughed.
“Because she had a house, an inheritance, and no family left to question me.”
Claire stopped the recording.
Daniel sat across from her.
“You don’t have to hear the rest today.”
“Yes, I do.”
He continued playing it.
Ryan described researching Evelyn’s estate before approaching Claire at the fundraiser.
He knew she had recently lost the woman who raised her.
He knew the mansion was held in trust.
He believed marriage would eventually give him leverage over Claire and access to the property.
When Claire became pregnant, his plan changed.
A custody attorney told him that controlling Noah could strengthen his claim to remain in the family home.
That was when he began building the instability file.
Maya’s voice became angry.
“You told me you loved her once.”
“I loved how easy she made it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Every early memory changed shape.
Ryan helping at the fundraiser.
Ryan asking about Evelyn.
Ryan promising he did not want the house.
His courtship had been research performed with flowers.
Daniel stopped the audio.
“Claire, being deceived does not mean you were foolish.”
“I invited him into the home my grandmother protected.”
“You invited someone you believed loved you.”
“I gave him six years.”
“He stole those years. You didn’t give them knowingly.”
Claire looked toward the window.
Noah was drawing at the dining table with the victim advocate.
He drew the mansion, the oak tree, and three people holding hands.
Claire, Noah, and a woman with gray hair.
“Who is that?” Claire asked later.
“Great-Grandma Evelyn,” Noah said. “You said she made the house safe.”
Claire swallowed her tears.
“Yes, she did.”
The recording became the strongest proof of Ryan’s long-term intent.
But his attorney argued that ugly words did not establish financial crimes.
He claimed Ryan had exaggerated while arguing with Maya.
To prove the conspiracy, investigators still needed the original source files used to forge Claire’s signature.
Those files were missing from Ryan’s computers.
Then Noah said something unexpected during a meeting with a child specialist.
“Daddy kept Mommy’s name in Grandma Diane’s blue box.”
The specialist asked what he meant.
Noah drew a square with a silver key.
