Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN HIS OFFICE

Maya Collins had joined Ryan’s company two years earlier.
Officially, she was a financial consultant.
Unofficially, she was always nearby.
She attended late meetings.
She joined Ryan on business trips.
She called on Sunday mornings with problems that somehow could not wait until Monday.
Ryan described her as brilliant but difficult.
“She doesn’t have many friends,” he once told Claire. “Work is all she has.”
Claire tried to be kind.
She invited Maya to Noah’s birthday party.
Maya arrived two hours late wearing a red dress and carrying a bottle of bourbon for Ryan.
She brought Noah nothing.
At dinner, Maya knew which wine Ryan preferred and how he liked his steak cooked.
When Claire asked how she knew, Maya smiled.
“We eat together more often than you think.”
Ryan laughed and called it a joke.
Claire did not.
After the debt letter arrived, Maya began visiting the house almost daily.
She brought spreadsheets and spoke in urgent whispers with Ryan behind the office door.
Whenever Claire entered, the conversation stopped.
On the fourth evening, Claire found Maya alone in Ryan’s office.
She was sitting behind his desk.
The red debt envelope lay open beside her.
“You’ve read our personal documents?” Claire asked.
Maya leaned back.
“Business documents.”
“The house is listed as collateral.”
“Then I suppose it became business.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Why did you text Ryan asking whether I agreed?”
Maya’s smile weakened.
“Because your husband is under enormous pressure.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Maya stood.
She was wearing Ryan’s gray cashmere sweater.
Claire recognized the tiny repaired tear near the cuff.
Ryan had claimed he left it at the cleaners.
Maya glanced down and understood what Claire had noticed.
“He keeps clothes at the office.”
“Why are you wearing them?”
“The air-conditioning is cold.”
Ryan entered before Claire could respond.
He looked from Maya to the sweater.
Then he became angry with Claire.
“You came into my private office without knocking.”
“This is my house.”
“It is our house.”
“Then why is she sitting at your desk wearing your clothes?”
Maya removed the sweater and placed it over the chair.
“I don’t need to be insulted.”
She walked past Claire.
Ryan followed her to the hallway and apologized.
To Maya.
Not to his wife.
That night, Claire lay awake beside him.
Ryan slept facing away from her.
At 2:13 a.m., his phone vibrated beneath the pillow.
Claire waited until his breathing became steady.
Then she reached carefully for it.
The screen displayed a message from Maya.
Ten more days, and she’ll be gone.
Claire’s fingers turned cold.

Before she could open the conversation, Ryan’s eyes opened.
👉 Maya’s message sounded like an affair—but the ten-day deadline matched the exact date Claire’s $150,000 payment was due.
