Chapter 5 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T HERS
Daniel asked Claire to photograph every page.
He sent the signature to a forensic document examiner.
The preliminary result arrived the next morning.
The signature had been digitally copied from an old tax form.
It was not written by hand.
Claire sat inside her parked car while Daniel explained the implications.
“If Ryan submitted this document, he committed fraud.”
“What if Maya submitted it?”
“Then we determine whether he knew.”
Claire remembered Ryan’s panic, the pressure from his parents, and Maya’s ten-day message.
He knew.
Daniel advised Claire to take Noah and leave immediately.
She almost did.
Then she imagined Ryan claiming she had abandoned the marriage based on a misunderstanding.
She imagined his parents defending him.
She imagined Maya deleting every message before investigators found it.
“I need proof,” Claire said.
“You already have a forged document.”
“I need proof of what they’re planning.”
Daniel did not like the idea.
But he understood why she needed answers.
He contacted Claire’s bank and requested enhanced fraud monitoring on the proposed transfer.
The payment would pass through a two-day commercial holding account before final settlement.
If the creditor’s identity or documents proved fraudulent, the bank could freeze and recall the funds.
Claire told Ryan she was considering paying the debt.
His entire personality changed.
He brought flowers home.
He cooked dinner.
He helped Noah with his bath and read three bedtime stories instead of one.
That night, he held Claire close.
“You’re saving our family,” he whispered.
Claire stared into the darkness.
“Is that what I’m doing?”
“Of course.”
The following afternoon, Daniel identified Northbridge’s registered address.
It belonged to a mailbox rental store.
Its legal representative was an attorney who had once handled business for Maya’s mother.
The company had been formed only six weeks earlier.
The supposed $150,000 loan had been issued eighteen months before the company existed.
Daniel called it impossible.
Claire called it a trap.
Still, she told Ryan she would make the payment.
He kissed her so hard that it almost felt like desperation.
Then he entered the bathroom with his phone.
Claire opened the home-security application Daniel had helped her reinstall.
The office camera had been disabled.
The kitchen camera had been turned toward the wall.
But an old nursery monitor remained active near the hallway.
Through it, Claire heard Ryan speaking behind the bathroom door.
“She agreed.”
Maya’s voice came through the speaker.
“And after the transfer?”
Ryan answered without hesitation.
“She leaves.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Maya laughed softly.
“Does she know I’m moving in?”
