Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO CALLED IT LOYALTY
The shared account belonged to Maya and Diane Bennett.
Ryan’s mother.
Daniel showed Claire the bank records.
Over eighteen months, Ryan’s construction company sent money to consulting companies controlled by Maya.
Maya then transferred portions into Diane’s account.
Diane used the money to pay her mortgage, purchase a luxury SUV, and fund frequent vacations.
When the company began running out of cash, Ryan created the false Northbridge debt.
Claire’s $150,000 was meant to replace the money he and Maya had stolen.
Diane knew.
Her statements about a wife’s duty had not come from fear for her son.
They came from fear that her own secret payments would be exposed.
Investigators questioned her.
At first, she claimed the transfers were gifts.
Then detectives showed her the messages between Ryan and Maya.
MOM WILL KEEP QUIET AS LONG AS HER HOUSE IS PAID.
Diane stopped answering questions.
Ryan’s father, Paul, insisted he knew nothing.
He had believed his wife’s new money came from investments.
When he confronted Diane, she blamed Claire.
“If Claire had supported Ryan properly, none of this would have been necessary.”
Paul moved out that night.
For the first time, he contacted Claire without asking her to help his son.
“I signed a custody statement Ryan prepared,” he admitted. “I didn’t read it carefully.”
“You were willing to call me an unfit mother without reading it?”
Paul lowered his head.
“I was wrong.”
“That doesn’t undo what you signed.”
“I know.”
Claire did not forgive him.
Not yet.
But she gave Daniel permission to accept any truthful information Paul could provide.
Paul turned over an old family tablet.
Ryan had used it during visits and forgotten to disconnect his messaging account.
The tablet contained conversations stretching back more than a year.
Ryan and Maya discussed hotels, money, and the mansion.
One message was dated on Claire’s birthday.
Maya: How long do I have to keep pretending she’s your wife?
Ryan: Until she pays what I need and signs the house over.
Maya: Then what?
Ryan: We make her look unstable. I keep Noah. You move in.
Maya: And Claire?
Ryan: She’ll disappear once she realizes no one believes her.
Claire read the message without crying.
Ryan had not merely stopped loving her.
He had spent a year planning to erase her.
Then Daniel opened an attached photograph.
It showed Ryan and Maya standing inside a newly built condominium.
On the kitchen counter was a purchase contract.
