Chapter 18 - THE VERDICT
The jury deliberated for nine hours.
Claire waited at the mansion with Noah and Daniel.
She did not watch the reporters outside the courthouse.
She made grilled cheese sandwiches.
She helped Noah finish a puzzle.
She washed the dishes while her hands trembled.
At 4:17 p.m., Daniel’s phone rang.
The jury had reached a verdict.
Claire returned to court.
Ryan stood between his attorneys.
Maya and Diane sat separately behind the prosecution.
The clerk read the counts.
Conspiracy to commit fraud.
Guilty.
Forgery.
Guilty.
Wire fraud.
Guilty.
Attempted theft of trust property.

Employee-benefit theft.
Guilty.
Evidence manipulation connected to the custody proceeding.

Ryan’s shoulders lowered with each word.
He no longer looked powerful.
He looked like a man who had finally reached the end of every excuse.
Maya received a reduced sentence because of her cooperation, but the judge made clear that cooperation did not erase cruelty.
She was ordered to return all stolen money, surrender the condominium claim, and complete a prison sentence followed by supervised release.
Diane avoided a longer prison term because she cooperated and returned the remaining funds.
She received home confinement, probation, and a permanent restriction from handling financial accounts for others.
Paul divorced her.
Ryan faced the harshest consequences.
At sentencing, forty-three employees submitted impact statements.
Marcus Lee described delaying retirement.
A mother described missing her daughter’s treatment appointment because she could not afford transportation.
Claire spoke last.
Ryan looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“I once believed helping my husband meant sacrificing until nothing remained,” she said. “But he did not need help. He needed access.”
Ryan lowered his head.
Claire continued.
“He used love as a password to my money, my home, and my confidence. I am not asking the court to punish him because he stopped loving me. I am asking the court to hold him responsible because he turned trust into a weapon.”
Ryan received a lengthy federal sentence.
The court ordered the sale of his remaining business assets to repay employees and creditors.
He lost the company, the condo, and every claim to the mansion.
His supervised parental contact would be reconsidered only after treatment and future family-court review.
When officers led him away, he turned toward Claire.
“I’m still Noah’s father.”
