Chapter 8 - THE HOSPITAL HE WANTED TO AVOID
North Crest Medical Center was not equipped for complex premature infants.
Its neonatal unit had only six beds.
Its transport team was contracted through Red Harbor Medical.
The same shell company receiving Daniel and Vanessa’s stolen money.
If Mia and Jack were moved there, Red Harbor would bill for transport, equipment, and private neonatal monitoring.
More importantly, Whitmore Medical’s internal investigators would lose direct access to the devices used in the twins’ care.
Daniel had arranged for a Bennett Clinical monitor to be installed at North Crest.
The monitor carried a duplicate serial number already connected to the fraud.
Claire’s babies were about to become proof that the equipment was still being distributed after safety complaints.
Daniel needed them moved.
Hospital legal counsel discovered the transfer request had been submitted using Claire’s copied electronic signature.
The timestamp placed Claire inside the operating room when it was signed.
Alexander instructed the hospital to notify law enforcement.
Daniel’s attorney argued it was an administrative error.
Then security opened the evidence bag containing Claire’s coat.
A technician carefully removed the lining.
The flash drive fell onto the table.
Daniel’s lawyer stopped speaking.
The drive contained more than invoices.
Claire had activated her phone recorder during several conversations.
One recording captured Daniel saying, “If St. Catherine’s discovers those units are refurbished, we lose the entire network.”
Vanessa replied, “Then make Claire approve the invoices.”
Another recording occurred after Vanessa became pregnant.
Vanessa asked when Daniel would leave Claire.
“As soon as she signs the compliance statement,” he said. “I need her responsible before I make her disposable.”
Claire listened from her hospital bed.
The words still hurt.
But they no longer confused her.
The hospital audit team authenticated the files.
Police obtained warrants for Daniel’s company offices and Vanessa’s apartment.
Vanessa demanded her attorney before answering questions.
Daniel accused Claire of stealing confidential corporate documents.
Alexander answered calmly.
“Evidence of fraud does not become protected because you stored it in your office.”
Daniel turned toward Claire.
“You have no idea what your grandfather is doing to our family.”
“Our family is inside two incubators.”
“You think he cares about you? He abandoned your mother.”
Alexander absorbed the accusation without defending himself.
Claire answered instead.
“He did abandon her.”
Daniel smiled, believing he had created division.
Claire continued.
“And he is still more honest about his failure than you are about yours.”
The officers escorted Daniel from the NICU.
He was not arrested that day.
But his access to Claire and the twins was suspended pending the forged-transfer investigation.
Vanessa left wearing hospital scrubs because Claire’s coat remained evidence.
As she passed the incubators, she looked at the twins without emotion.
Claire understood that Vanessa had not come to see them.
