Chapter 14 - THE COAT ON THE COURTROOM SCREEN
The criminal trial began ten months after Mia and Jack left the NICU.
Claire entered the courtroom carrying no babies.
They were home with a trusted nurse and Alexander.
Daniel sat beside his defense team.
Vanessa sat at a separate table after accepting a limited cooperation agreement.
Prosecutors displayed the cream maternity coat on a large screen.
They explained the loose seam.
The hidden flash drive.
The recordings and invoices.
Daniel’s attorney argued Claire stole trade secrets because she wanted revenge after discovering the affair.
Claire took the stand.
“When did you begin copying records?” the prosecutor asked.
“Before I knew about Vanessa.”
“Why?”
“Because neonatal equipment was being billed as new when it was not.”
“Did you intend to damage your husband’s company?”
“I intended to prevent unsafe devices from reaching infants.”
The defense attorney stood.
“You hid evidence in your clothing.”
“I hid records from a man who searched my office.”
“You secretly contacted your wealthy grandfather.”
“After Daniel forged my hospital signature.”
“You concealed your family’s ownership of Whitmore Medical during the marriage.”
“I did not control the shares, and Daniel believed my family connection did not exist.”
The attorney displayed a photograph of Claire and Alexander meeting privately.
“You were working with him before the premature birth.”
“Yes.”
“So the hospital investigation was not independent.”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“My grandfather ordered an audit. External investigators found the serial numbers, bank transfers, and reused equipment. Family relationships did not create those facts.”
The prosecution played Daniel’s recording.
“Position Claire as medically unstable and emotionally vindictive.”
Then the jury heard his instruction concerning the twins.
“North Crest will keep the devices outside Whitmore review.”
Daniel stopped taking notes.
Vanessa testified next.
She admitted the affair, shell companies, false transfer, and relabeling operation.
Daniel’s attorney attacked her as a liar seeking a lighter sentence.
Then prosecutors displayed Daniel’s messages directing every major step.
Vanessa had lied often.
The records still supported her testimony.
The final evidence came from the divorce packet.
Daniel’s email appeared on the screen.
Once she accepts prior approvals, legal can frame it as her compliance failure.
Claire looked at the man who once promised to protect her from being alone.

The trial paused before closing arguments.
