Chapter 6 - THE CALL CLAIRE FINALLY RETURNED
Alexander answered on the first ring.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he said, “Claire?”
His voice sounded older than she remembered.
She almost ended the call.
Instead, she asked one question.
“Do you still control Whitmore Medical Network?”
“I chair the family holding company.”
“Did you know Bennett Clinical Solutions was supplying St. Catherine’s?”
A pause followed.
“No.”
Claire explained the duplicate serial numbers, Red Harbor payments, and forged approvals.
Alexander did not interrupt.
When she finished, he asked whether Daniel knew she had contacted him.
“No.”
“Keep it that way.”
Claire’s anger returned.
“You do not get to give me orders.”
“You’re right.”
The immediate apology disarmed her.
Alexander continued.
“I spent years believing authority could repair what pride destroyed. It cannot. Tell me what you need.”
Claire looked toward the nursery.
“An independent audit.”
“You’ll have one.”
“And no special treatment because I’m Julia’s daughter.”
“You’ll have that too.”
Alexander placed a confidential audit team inside the network.
He did not reveal Claire’s identity.
The investigators confirmed the hospital had overpaid more than $7 million through inflated Bennett Clinical invoices.
Red Harbor received nearly $3 million.
Vanessa transferred part of that money into private accounts.
Another portion covered Daniel’s failing real-estate investments.
The refurbished neonatal devices had been purchased cheaply, relabeled, and billed as new.
Daniel had used Claire’s hospital credentials to approve exceptions.
The audit team advised waiting before confronting him.
They needed to identify everyone involved.
Claire agreed.
She met Alexander privately for the first time in twelve years.
He did not arrive in a limousine.
He came alone.
He looked at her pregnant stomach and began crying.
“I missed your mother’s entire adult life,” he said. “I don’t expect access to yours because I finally regret it.”
Claire remained guarded.
“Then why help?”
“Because helping is what I should do. Forgiveness is your decision.”
He gave her a private number and arranged independent legal counsel.
He also told her something she had never known.
Julia had never lost her shares in Whitmore Medical.
Alexander had disinherited her publicly during their argument.
Legally, he never completed it.
After Julia’s death, the shares passed to Claire through a protected trust.
Claire owned twenty-four percent of the private hospital network.
She had never received distributions because Alexander placed them in a holding account after Claire refused contact.
“They are yours,” he said.
“I don’t want your money.”
“It was your mother’s.”
Claire did not touch the documents.
She was not ready.
But she kept the private number.
Two weeks later, after Daniel learned the audit had begun, Claire went into premature labor.
He was the only person with her when the contractions started.
