Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN CLAIRE’S COAT

Claire became pregnant after three years of trying.
At the first ultrasound, the doctor found two heartbeats.
Daniel cried.
He held Claire’s hand and promised everything would change.
For several months, it did.
He attended appointments.
He painted the nursery.
He read books about premature birth because twins carried higher risks.
Claire began to believe the equipment fraud had involved employees beneath him.
Then Vanessa started appearing at the house.
She brought company documents.
She stayed for dinner.
She entered rooms without knocking.
Claire once found her inside the nursery holding a tiny white sweater against her body.
“I was imagining how small they’ll be,” Vanessa said.
“You shouldn’t be in here alone.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Daniel said I’m family.”
At twenty-four weeks, Claire discovered hotel receipts linking Daniel and Vanessa.
One room.
Two meals.
Six weekends.
She confronted him.
Daniel did not deny the affair.
He blamed loneliness.
“You have spent this entire pregnancy trying to destroy my company.”
“I tried to prevent unsafe equipment from entering NICUs.”
“Our children need that company to survive.”
“Our children need parents who do not lie.”
Daniel left the house that night.
Vanessa moved into his company apartment three days later.
Still, he refused to discuss divorce.
He wanted Claire to sign a statement confirming that every Bennett Clinical contract had been properly reviewed.
She refused.
“You approved those invoices,” he said.
“Someone copied my signature.”
“Prove it.”
Claire began gathering evidence.
She recorded conversations.
She copied bank statements.
She photographed the serial numbers of the refurbished monitors.
She stored everything on an encrypted flash drive.
Daniel searched her home office.
She hid the drive inside a loose seam in her cream maternity coat.
The coat had belonged to her mother.
Julia wore it during her own pregnancy.
Claire planned to give the drive to hospital legal counsel after one final meeting with her supervisor.
Before that meeting occurred, Claire came home and found the coat missing.
Daniel stood in the bedroom.
“So are several files,” she said.
“You’re becoming paranoid.”
“Where is my coat?”
“I donated some things you no longer wear.”
Claire was seven months pregnant.
She still wore it every week.
That evening, Vanessa posted a photograph from Daniel’s apartment.
She stood beside a window wearing Claire’s cream coat.
Her hand rested on her stomach.
The caption read:
NEW SEASONS REQUIRE LETTING GO OF OLD THINGS.
Claire zoomed in.
Vanessa’s abdomen was rounded.
The affair had produced a pregnancy.
Daniel had not told her.
Seconds later, Claire received a message from him.
Sign the compliance statement, and I’ll make sure you and the twins are financially protected.
Claire placed one hand over her stomach.
The babies moved beneath it.
She did not sign.
