Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE TWINS CAME EARLY

Claire’s first contraction bent her over the kitchen counter.
She was thirty weeks pregnant.
Daniel stood across from her holding the empty red evidence folder he had found in her desk.
“Where is the drive?”
“My babies are coming.”
“You said the same thing last week.”
“This is different.”
Another contraction tightened across her back.
Claire reached for her phone.
Daniel took it first.
“Tell me where the files are.”
“Call an ambulance.”
“If the audit destroys my company, those babies will have nothing.”
“They will have me.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then he looked at the hallway closet where Claire’s coats once hung.
“Was it in the cream coat?”
Claire’s face betrayed her.
Daniel called Vanessa.
“Check every pocket.”
Claire tried to move past him.
Her water broke across the kitchen floor.
Daniel froze.
For one second, fear replaced calculation.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa was calling from the apartment.
“There’s nothing in the pockets,” she said. “Just a torn lining.”
Claire understood.
The drive had slipped deeper inside the coat.
Vanessa still had it.
Daniel called emergency services only after the audit office sent him a message requesting an interview.
He did not ride in the ambulance.
Claire arrived at St. Catherine’s alone.
Doctors delivered Mia and Jack by emergency C-section less than two hours later.
Both babies required immediate respiratory support.
Claire woke in recovery asking for Daniel.
A nurse said he had not arrived.
Alexander stood outside the room but did not enter until Claire invited him.
He looked through the NICU glass at the twins.
“They are so small,” he whispered.
Claire began crying.
Not because the babies were weak.
Because Daniel had left her on the kitchen floor while searching for evidence.
Alexander remained beside her.
He did not promise everything would be fine.
He promised the babies would receive every medically necessary resource, regardless of insurance or cost.
Daniel appeared the next afternoon.
He brought no flowers.
He brought an attorney.
He asked Claire to sign a statement saying he had called the ambulance immediately.
She refused.
He asked where the drive was.
She refused.
Then he told her Vanessa was pregnant.
Claire looked at him.
“I know.”
His surprise lasted only a second.
He explained that he wanted a fast divorce.
He said Vanessa needed stability before their child arrived.
Claire looked through the glass at Mia’s incubator.
“And these children?”
“They’ll remain on my insurance until the decree is final.”
It sounded like generosity.
It was a deadline.
Nine days later, he returned with Vanessa, the divorce papers, and Claire’s stolen coat.
He expected the woman in the hospital bed to have no fight left.
May you like
Instead, Claire called the man Daniel had never believed existed.
👉 By the time Alexander entered the NICU, the divorce was no longer the greatest threat—Daniel had already submitted forged documents to move the twins beyond the hospital audit’s reach.
