Chapter 2 - THE TRANSFER THAT CLAIRE NEVER APPROVED
The hospital administrator took the transfer form from Daniel.
“It is standard paperwork,” Daniel said. “My wife is exhausted. She asked me to handle it.”
Claire looked at the signature.
The shape was hers.
The pressure was not.
“I did not approve a transfer.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You agreed the twins would receive better care at North Crest.”
“I have never discussed North Crest with you.”
Alexander addressed the administrator.
“Contact legal. Preserve every electronic record connected to that request.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is becoming absurd. Daniel is their father.”
“Then he should be able to explain why he tried to move two unstable premature infants without consulting their neonatologist,” Alexander replied.
The head physician stepped forward.
“Mia experienced respiratory distress this morning. Jack still requires assisted feeding. Neither child is medically cleared for transport.”
Claire’s face tightened.
Daniel had known.
The doctor had called him before arriving.
He had proceeded anyway.
Hospital security asked Vanessa to remove Claire’s coat because it had been identified as disputed property.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“It was a gift.”
“It belonged to my daughter,” Claire said.
Daniel corrected her sharply.
“Your clothes were left in my house.”
“Our house.”
“Not after today.”
Alexander’s expression changed at the casual cruelty in Daniel’s voice.
Vanessa removed the coat and dropped it onto a chair.
A small flash drive fell from the inside pocket.
Daniel moved first.
“That belongs to my company.”
Security stopped him before he reached it.
Claire stared at the drive.
Three weeks earlier, she had hidden it inside a tear in the coat’s lining.
It contained invoices, voice recordings, and photographs from Daniel’s office.
She believed he had found and destroyed it after searching their bedroom.
Instead, Vanessa had taken the coat without checking the pocket.
Alexander instructed security to place the drive in an evidence bag until Claire’s attorney arrived.
Daniel’s confidence vanished.
“What is on it?”
Claire did not answer.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You said you cleared her files.”
The room became silent.
Daniel turned toward his mistress.
“Stop talking.”
The words were too late.
The hospital administrator had heard them.
So had the security officers.
Claire glanced down at the signed page on her blanket.
Daniel had brought her a divorce petition, an asset waiver, and an agreement stating that she accepted full responsibility for the twins’ medical bills.
Claire had signed only the acknowledgment that she had received the papers.
Nothing else.
Daniel had not noticed.
He had been too busy enjoying the moment.
Alexander moved beside Claire’s bed.
“You and the children are staying here,” he said.
Daniel’s attorney appeared on his phone.
He stepped into the hallway to answer.
Vanessa followed him.

Before the door closed, Claire heard Daniel whisper, “If that drive opens, we have a much bigger problem than the divorce.”
