Chapter 7 - THE WATER BOTTLE BESIDE THE BED
Celeste claimed the bottle came from the hospital cafeteria.
The cafeteria did not sell that brand.
Her fingerprints covered the cap.
The sedative matched pills recovered from Dr. Renner’s office.
Claire had taken only two sips before a nurse replaced the bottle.
The amount in her blood was low.
Had she finished it, she might have remained unconscious for hours after delivery.
Celeste’s attorney called it a medication mix-up.
Then investigators found a message she sent Vanessa:
Bottle in room. She’ll be quiet by discharge.
Vanessa replied with a heart.
Prosecutors charged Celeste and Vanessa with conspiracy to drug Claire, custodial interference, fraud, and attempted kidnapping.
Adrian faced additional charges for using forged medical and legal documents.
Victor Cole remained under investigation.
Claire stayed in the hospital for five days.
Lily slept beside her in a secured bassinet.
Harrison visited every morning but never entered without knocking.
He brought no photographers, company executives, or expensive gifts.
He brought Claire’s mother’s old rocking chair from storage.
“She used it when you were born,” he said.
Claire touched the worn wooden arm.
“I thought you got rid of everything.”
“I kept more than I admitted.”
Their reunion was not immediately easy.
Claire still remembered Harrison investigating Adrian behind her back.
Harrison still carried anger over the years Adrian stole.
But neither used the crisis to avoid accountability.
“I was controlling,” Harrison said. “I made it easier for Adrian to convince you that independence required leaving me completely.”
Claire looked at Lily.
“I wanted to prove I could choose my own life.”
“You had that right.”
“I chose him.”
“You chose with information he manipulated.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I should have seen it.”
Harrison shook his head.
“He worked to make sure you didn’t.”
Naomi helped Claire file for divorce, sole temporary custody, and protective orders.
Adrian’s attorneys responded aggressively.
They claimed Harrison was using wealth to separate a father from his child.
Adrian appeared on television through a statement.
“My wife’s family abandoned her for years. Now they are exploiting her medical vulnerability to seize our daughter.”
Claire watched from the hospital.
The lie sounded convincing because it contained one visible truth.
She and Harrison had been estranged.
Adrian expected that fact to outweigh everything else.
Naomi released no emotional statement.
She filed evidence.
The forged email address.
Returned letters Adrian intercepted.
False surrogacy records.
DNA.
Sedative.
International travel plan.
Claire’s original birth plan.
The court scheduled an emergency custody hearing.
Adrian requested access to Lily before then.
The judge allowed a supervised hospital visit.
Claire did not want him near her.
Naomi explained that refusing without a court basis might help his argument.
Security positioned two officers inside the room.
Adrian approached the bassinet.
For a moment, he looked like a father seeing his child.
Then he whispered:
“You were supposed to make this easier.”
The bassinet microphone captured the words.
Adrian saw the recording indicator too late.
He looked toward Claire.
“You’re recording me?”
Claire held Lily.
“The hospital records every supervised visit.”
His expression hardened.
“You think your father can erase me.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“Your choices are doing that.”
After Adrian left, the nurse discovered something attached beneath the bassinet blanket.
A small tracking device.
Adrian had placed it there during the visit.
