Chapter 1 - YES, THAT WHITMORE

Claire had held her daughter for less than four minutes when Adrian tore the baby from her arms.
“Stop!”
The word ripped through Claire’s exhausted body.
She tried to sit up, but pain burned across her abdomen. The hospital blanket slid toward the floor as she reached for the crying newborn.
Adrian stepped backward in his gray suit, holding Lily against his chest.
The baby’s face turned red as she screamed.
Vanessa Cole stood beside him in a tight red dress, smiling as though she had just received an expensive gift.
Adrian’s mother, Celeste Vale, pointed toward Claire from the foot of the bed.
“Your surrogacy job is done.”
Claire stared at her.
“What?”
Vanessa leaned over Lily.
“She has Adrian’s eyes.”
“Give her back.”
Claire reached again.
Adrian moved farther away.
“You’ll tear your stitches.”
“She is my daughter!”
“No,” Celeste said. “You carried a child intended for Adrian and Vanessa.”
A nurse stopped in the doorway.
She looked from Claire’s hospital bracelet to the newborn in Adrian’s arms.
“Sir, return the baby to the patient.”
Adrian threw a folder onto Claire’s bed.
“She signed away parental rights.”
The first page displayed the words:
GESTATIONAL-CARRIER AGREEMENT.
Below them were the names Adrian Vale and Vanessa Cole.
Intended parents.
Claire Whitmore Vale.
Gestational carrier.
Claire turned the page with a shaking hand.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked almost perfect.
Almost.
“I never signed this.”
“You signed everything at the fertility clinic,” Adrian said.
“We never used a fertility clinic.”
Vanessa’s smile faltered.
Claire looked toward the phone on the bedside tray.
Adrian swept it away before she could reach it.
“You’re confused. The medication is affecting you.”
The nurse saw the movement.
She also saw the emergency-contact line on Claire’s admission chart.
Harrison Whitmore.
She stepped into the hallway and pulled up the full record.
Claire’s maiden name appeared on older insurance documents.
So did a private number marked:
CONTACT IMMEDIATELY IF PATIENT OR CHILD IS AT RISK.
The nurse made the call.
Across Manhattan, Harrison Whitmore sat at the head of a conference table inside Whitmore Global’s headquarters.
He had not spoken to his daughter in fourteen months.
When the nurse said Claire’s name, he stood.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes. She just delivered a baby. Her husband is trying to remove the child using disputed surrogacy papers.”
Harrison’s face became cold.
“Lock down the maternity floor.”
“I don’t have authority to—”
“Follow hospital safety protocol. Call security, social work, and police. I’m calling her attorney.”
Back in the room, Claire heard a secure-elevator alarm in the hallway.
Two hospital security officers appeared at the door.
Adrian’s confidence began to disappear.
Vanessa took one step backward.
Celeste stopped smiling.
Claire looked at her husband.
“Yes,” she whispered. “That Whitmore.”
Security instructed Adrian to place Lily in the hospital bassinet.
He refused.
“She is my child.”
The nurse moved closer.
“She is a newborn patient. You cannot remove her from this unit.”
Adrian tightened his grip.
Lily screamed louder.
Claire’s heart monitor accelerated.
A hospital supervisor entered with another officer.
“Put the baby down now.”
Adrian finally lowered Lily into the bassinet.
The nurse rolled her toward Claire.
Vanessa reached after the child.
Security blocked her.
Claire placed her left hand over Lily’s tiny chest.
“I’m here.”
Adrian pointed toward the folder.
“The contract gives us custody.”
A woman’s voice answered from the hallway.
“No enforceable contract gives you permission to abduct a newborn from a recovering patient.”
Attorney Naomi Lawson entered carrying a leather case.
Behind her stood a police detective and Harrison Whitmore.
Adrian stared at the older man.
He had met Harrison only once.
That meeting ended with Harrison warning Claire not to marry him.
Adrian had spent years telling everyone Harrison disowned his daughter afterward.
Harrison looked at the bruise forming on Claire’s wrist where Adrian had shoved her hand away.
Then he looked at Lily.
Finally, he faced Adrian.
“You mistook distance for abandonment.”
Naomi opened the disputed contract.
The notary seal belonged to a woman whose commission had expired two years earlier.
The fertility-clinic address belonged to a vacant office.
And the embryo-identification number listed on the contract did not exist.
Detective Maya Torres closed the hospital-room door.
“Mr. Vale, you and the two women with you are not leaving until we understand who created these papers.”
Claire held Lily as tightly as her weakened arms allowed.
Adrian had believed the forged contract would make her powerless.
He had not realized Claire had already sent a copy of another document to Naomi three weeks earlier.
