Chapter 5 - THE SIGNATURES MADE WHILE SHE SLEPT
Claire labored for nineteen hours.
Adrian acted like a devoted husband whenever nurses entered.
He wiped her forehead.
Held her hand.
Told staff she became anxious around legal discussions.
When contractions intensified, he asked whether additional medication could “help her calm down.”
The anesthesiologist refused to discuss anything without Claire’s consent.
Vanessa remained in the family waiting room pretending to be Claire’s close friend.
Celeste carried the surrogacy folder.
During labor, Claire’s nurse changed shifts.
The incoming nurse saw the false gestational-carrier alert and contacted the legal office.
A temporary warning appeared:
PARENTAGE DISPUTE — INFANT NOT TO LEAVE SECURE UNIT.
Adrian saw only part of the note.
He assumed it referred to Claire’s expected objections.
After Lily was born, complications required the physician to treat Claire immediately.
She was exhausted, bleeding, and barely conscious.
Adrian leaned over her with a tablet.
“Sign the discharge preferences.”
Claire tried to focus.
The screen showed a hospital logo.
She touched nothing.
Adrian guided her finger toward the signature field.
The nurse stopped him.
“She cannot consent right now.”
“It’s only a nursery authorization.”
“It can wait.”
Adrian left the tablet on a chair.
Later, investigators recovered it.
The document was not a nursery authorization.
It appointed Vanessa temporary guardian and authorized Lily’s discharge to Celeste’s address.
Adrian had already signed Claire’s name electronically.
All he needed was a biometric touch to authenticate it.
When Claire became fully conscious, Lily was placed on her chest.
The baby’s warmth changed the room.
For several minutes, Claire forgot the investigation.
Forgot the cameras.
Forgot Adrian.
She saw only her daughter.
Then the door opened.
Adrian entered with Vanessa and Celeste.
The nurse had stepped out to retrieve supplies.
Adrian moved before Claire understood what was happening.
He pulled Lily from her arms.
Celeste announced the surrogacy was complete.
Vanessa smiled.
The folder landed on the bed.
Claire reached for her phone.
Adrian shoved her hand aside.
The nurse returned.
Everything they planned became visible at once.
Security arrived.
Naomi arrived.
Detective Torres arrived.
Harrison arrived.
Lily remained on the unit.
Adrian’s biometric form failed because the hospital had disabled external discharge authorizations.
The intended-parent petition had not been approved.
The notary seal was invalid.
The DNA report remained sealed but available.
Yet Adrian refused to abandon the story.
He insisted Vanessa’s embryo had been implanted into Claire at Meridian Fertility Center.
Detective Torres searched the center’s state registration.
No licensed clinic existed under that name.
Vanessa claimed the procedure occurred privately.
Naomi asked for the physician’s name.
Vanessa provided Dr. Paul Renner.
Renner was an endocrinologist whose medical license had been suspended for insurance fraud.
He was also Celeste’s cousin.
The detective requested an emergency search warrant.
Inside Renner’s office, investigators found boxes of blank consent forms, copied notary seals, and medical templates.
One file bore Claire’s name.
The first entry had been created two months before she became pregnant.
The plan existed before Lily was conceived.
Another folder contained Adrian’s name and a financial projection.
If the custody transfer succeeded, Adrian expected payment from someone identified only as V.C. SENIOR.
