Chapter 4 - THE CHILD CELESTE HAD ALREADY NAMED
Celeste began calling the baby Lily before Claire chose the name.
“It was Adrian’s grandmother’s name,” she explained.
Claire had mentioned considering Lily only once.
Vanessa had been in the room.
Soon embroidered blankets arrived.
LILY VALE-COLE.
Claire stared at the hyphenated name.
Vanessa laughed.
“The company made a mistake.”
There were too many mistakes.
The nursery inside Celeste’s townhouse contained a crib, formula, clothes, and photographs of Adrian and Vanessa.
No photograph of Claire.
Celeste claimed it was a guest nursery.
Then Claire found adoption brochures inside a drawer.
The intended-parent petition identified Celeste’s townhouse as Lily’s primary residence.
It stated Claire would have no contact after delivery.
Claire took photographs and left.
Adrian followed her home.
“You entered my mother’s private rooms.”
“She built a nursery for my baby.”
“For her granddaughter.”
“Why is Vanessa’s name on the blankets?”
He did not answer.
Claire packed a small bag.
Adrian blocked the apartment door.
“You are not leaving in your condition.”
“Move.”
“You are panicking.”
“Move.”
His hand closed around her wrist.
Claire looked down.
Adrian released her before leaving a visible mark.
“Where would you go?” he asked. “Your father doesn’t want you. Your friends think you chose us. You have no money for a hotel.”
Claire had money.
The emergency account her mother created remained untouched.
Adrian did not know about it.
She also had Harrison.
But admitting that would reveal the investigation.
Claire set the bag down.
“I’m tired.”
Adrian believed he had won.
That night, Claire slept with her phone beneath the pillow.
At three in the morning, she heard Adrian speaking in the kitchen.
Celeste and Vanessa were with him.
“The baby comes to us before Claire leaves recovery,” Celeste said.
Vanessa sounded nervous.
“What if the nurse refuses?”
“The contract is in the chart.”
“And if Claire screams?”
“Postpartum episode,” Adrian replied. “Security removes her, not us.”
Celeste asked about the Whitmores.
Adrian laughed.
“Harrison cut her off. He won’t know until it’s over.”
“What about DNA?”
Vanessa asked the question so quietly Claire almost missed it.
Adrian answered:
“Once the intended-parent order is entered, biology becomes a later argument. By then we’re out of state.”
Claire covered her mouth.
They planned to leave New York with Lily.
Celeste had already rented a house in Connecticut.
Vanessa’s passport showed an international flight scheduled six days after the due date.
The plan might end outside the country.
Claire sent the recording to Naomi.
Police could not arrest them for discussing documents without more evidence of an immediate attempt.
Naomi urged Claire to leave.
This time Claire agreed.
She moved into a secure apartment Harrison maintained for corporate witnesses.
Father and daughter met there after fourteen months apart.
Harrison stopped at the doorway when he saw her.
Claire had imagined anger.
Questions.
An argument about Adrian.
Instead, Harrison whispered:
“I thought you never wanted to see me again.”
“I thought you told me never to come back.”
He showed her the letters Adrian had returned.
She showed him the message screenshot Adrian claimed came from him.
The email address differed by one letter.
Adrian had created it.
The estrangement was manufactured.
Harrison did not say I warned you.
He did not insult Adrian.
He asked:
“What do you need?”
Claire began crying.
“I need my daughter to be safe.”
“Then that is where we start.”
Harrison offered to move her to another hospital.
Naomi advised against sudden changes because the false chart might follow and reveal Claire knew.
Instead, they notified the current hospital’s chief legal officer and created a protected birth plan.
Only a small team knew.
The disputed documents would remain visible long enough to identify anyone using them.
Security would intervene if Adrian tried to remove Lily.
Claire entered labor two weeks early.
Adrian arrived before Harrison could reach the hospital.
So did Vanessa and Celeste.
