Chapter 7 - The Story He Told His Parents
Evelyn and Robert arrived Friday evening.
Evelyn hugged Grant before she even acknowledged Claire.
Robert carried two suitcases inside and avoided Claire’s eyes.
During dinner, Grant described the financial trouble facing his company.
He claimed Claire had promised to invest the lake house and then changed her mind after he had already signed contracts.
“That isn’t true,” Claire said.
Grant sighed heavily.
“This is what I’ve been living with.”
Evelyn looked at Claire with disappointment.
“My son put years into improving this property.”
“The deed was never transferred legally.”
Grant leaned back.
“There she goes again.”
He told his parents Claire had become suspicious, irrational and obsessed with keeping “his” assets away from him.
He said she had hidden money.
He said she had contacted divorce attorneys.
Every lie contained one small piece of truth twisted into something ugly.
Evelyn began crying.
“Why are you doing this to our family?”
Claire looked at Robert.
“Did Grant tell you he borrowed $1.8 million against the house using my signature?”
Robert’s head lifted sharply.
Grant answered before his father could.
“That loan saved the company we all depend on.”
“You told me the property secured itself,” Robert said.
Grant’s face tightened.
“It’s complicated.”
Robert pushed his plate away.
“You asked me to sign a witness statement.”
“And you refused.”
“Because I didn’t see Claire sign anything.”
Silence spread across the table.
Evelyn turned toward her son.
“You told us she signed the deed willingly.”
“She did.”
“I was with her at the hospital that day,” Evelyn whispered.
Grant stood.
“The date is an administrative detail.”
Claire saw fear enter Evelyn’s face.
For the first time, Grant’s mother understood that her son had not simply exaggerated.
He had placed her inside his lie.
Later, Robert found Claire alone on the dock.
“Did he really forge your name?”
“Yes.”
Robert looked toward the house.
Then he said something Claire never expected.
