During the trial, federal investigators traced the resort investor’s missing advance.
The money had not been spent on construction.
It had been transferred to a holding company controlled by a county zoning official.
Grant needed approval for a private marina and expanded access road.
The official had repeatedly rejected the plans because they threatened protected wetlands.
Two weeks after receiving the hidden payment, he changed his recommendation.
Grant had bribed him.
The crime explained why the project had moved so quickly.
It also explained why Grant needed Claire’s property before environmental groups could challenge the approval.
The federal prosecutor expanded the case.
Bank fraud became only one part of a larger conspiracy involving bribery, false environmental reports and investor deception.
Grant’s former project manager turned over internal messages.
In one, Grant ordered workers to clear protected shoreline vegetation before permits were issued.
In another, he wrote:
ONCE CLAIRE IS OUT, NO ONE CAN STOP ACCESS CONSTRUCTION.
Claire looked through the photographs of uprooted trees and damaged nesting areas.
The lake had not simply been a financial target.
Grant had been willing to destroy the place her grandmother loved.
The county suspended every permit connected to Mercer Shore Development.
The bribed official resigned and was arrested.
The investor filed a civil fraud lawsuit.
Grant’s company entered bankruptcy.
He tried to blame Serena.
Serena produced his signed instructions.
He tried to blame his employees.
They produced his emails.
He tried to blame Claire.
The original trust and forged deed proved she had never authorized anything.
By the end of the second week, Grant sat alone at the defense table.
Even his own attorney stopped describing him as misunderstood.
Then the prosecution presented the final map.
Grant had not intended to build the resort exactly as advertised.
