The organization needed a private place where women could meet attorneys, financial counselors and housing advocates without being tracked by controlling partners.
Claire offered the renovated guesthouse beside the lake.
She named the program Margaret’s Door.
Nora volunteered as its first legal adviser.
The program focused on a form of abuse many people failed to recognize.
Hidden debt.
Stolen signatures.
Controlled bank accounts.
Threats disguised as financial advice.
During the first month, a young mother arrived carrying a grocery bag filled with unopened loan notices.
Her husband had borrowed money in her name.
She believed she would lose everything if she left him.
Claire sat beside her at the same dining table where Grant had placed the divorce petition.
“You are not foolish for believing someone you loved,” Claire said.
The woman began to cry.
Claire gave her Nora’s number.
Within weeks, the false debts were challenged and an emergency protection order was granted.
