Chapter 1 - The Signature He Couldn’t Force
“Sign it and get out.”
Grant Mercer slammed the divorce petition onto the dining table so hard that cold coffee spilled across the final page.
Claire stood across from him in the pale morning light, one hand pressed against her burning cheek.
The other held her phone.
Her fingers would not stop trembling.
Only minutes earlier, they had been eating breakfast inside the lake house Claire had loved since childhood.
Now broken dishes covered the floor.
The eggs on their plates had gone cold.
Grant’s mother, Evelyn, sat behind them with both hands over her face, crying.
His father, Robert, stood frozen in the doorway.
He had arrived just in time to see his son strike his wife.
Grant stepped closer.
“That house was never yours.”
Claire looked down at the divorce papers.
According to the petition, she had already transferred the lake house to Grant eight months earlier.
She would receive nothing from its sale.
She had forty-eight hours to leave.
Her phone lit up.
A message from her attorney appeared.
DO NOT SIGN. THE LAKE HOUSE DEED IS STILL IN YOUR NAME.
Claire’s fear began to disappear.
She slowly raised her eyes.
“You lied to everyone.”
Grant saw the message.
His face tightened.
He reached for the phone.
Claire stepped back.
The doorbell rang.
Everyone stopped moving.
Through the glass doors, a black sedan waited beside the front steps.
Attorney Nora Ellis walked toward the house carrying a thick folder.
Grant’s face lost all color.
Nora entered without removing her coat.
She placed the folder beside the divorce petition.
“We found the forged deed.”
Grant stared at the documents.
For the first time that morning, he had nothing to say.
