Chapter 3 - The Land Around the Water

Grant’s behavior changed slowly.
He began receiving calls late at night.
He left the room whenever Claire entered.
He installed a second password on his laptop and stopped leaving financial statements on the kitchen counter.
Then survey crews appeared across the lake.
Claire watched them place bright stakes along the shoreline.
Grant claimed another developer was planning vacation homes.
“You don’t sound worried,” Claire said.
“Competition is good.”
But Grant knew every worker by name.
One afternoon, Claire found a rolled map inside his car.
It showed the entire northern side of Lake Briar.
Most of the properties were outlined in blue.
The lake house was outlined in red.
A road marked PRIVATE ACCESS cut directly through Claire’s land.
At the bottom of the map were the words:
BRIAR CROWN RESORT AND MARINA.
Claire photographed it before returning it to the car.
That evening, she asked Grant whether his company was involved in a resort.
He barely looked up from his drink.
“Where did you hear that?”
“So there is a resort?”
“It’s an early concept. Nothing important.”
“My house is in the center of the access road.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“It would increase the property value.”
“I don’t want an access road through my grandmother’s yard.”
“You haven’t seen the offer.”
“I’m not selling.”
Grant placed his glass down.
The sound was quiet, but Claire felt the warning behind it.
“Everything has a price.”
“This doesn’t.”
For several seconds, he stared at her as though she were a stranger standing between him and something he deserved.
Then he smiled again.
“You’re right. Forget I mentioned it.”
Two weeks later, Claire received a notice from the county thanking her for filing a change of mailing address.
She had filed no such request.
Her property tax bills were now being sent to Grant’s downtown office.
When she confronted him, he called it an administrative mistake.
Claire wanted to believe him.

Then her grandmother’s original deed vanished too.
👉 Someone was not merely hiding Claire’s property records—they were quietly taking control of every notice connected to her home.
