Chapter 2 - The House Before the Marriage
The lake house had belonged to Claire long before she met Grant.
Her grandmother, Margaret Bennett, had bought the property in 1978.
Back then, it was a small cedar cabin surrounded by pine trees and wild grass.
Margaret raised Claire there during summers after Claire’s mother died.
They painted the porch together.
They learned to bake bread in the narrow kitchen.
They watched thunderstorms cross the lake from beneath the same wool blanket.
When Margaret became ill, she transferred the property directly to Claire through a protected family trust.
The deed was clear.
The house was Claire’s separate property.
No spouse could claim it unless Claire personally signed a transfer after receiving independent legal advice.
Grant knew that.
Claire had shown him the deed before their wedding.
At the time, he had kissed her forehead and said he did not care who owned the house.
“I only care that you’re in it,” he told her.
Claire believed him.
For the first three years of their marriage, Grant seemed to love the property almost as much as she did.
He repaired the dock.
He replaced the roof.
He hosted quiet dinners for his parents.
He told Claire they would grow old beside the water.
Then his development company began struggling.
Mercer Shore Development had borrowed heavily to purchase land around the lake.
Grant told Claire it was part of a small residential project.
He never showed her the complete plans.
Whenever she asked questions, he said the details were complicated and boring.
Six months before the divorce papers appeared, Grant asked Claire to add his name to the deed.
Claire refused gently.
“It was my grandmother’s last gift to me.”
Grant smiled.
“Of course. I understand.”
But that night, Claire woke and found him standing beside the bedroom window.
He was staring across the lake at the empty shoreline.
Not with affection.
With calculation.
