Chapter 12 - The Accounts Beneath the Resort

Grant was arrested for domestic assault.
The judge released him the following morning under a strict no-contact order.
He was prohibited from entering the lake house or approaching Claire.
Serena hired a separate attorney.
She claimed she knew nothing about the forged deed.
But the resort investment group began auditing every payment made to Mercer Shore Development.
The numbers did not match.
Grant had borrowed $1.8 million against Claire’s property.
Only $600,000 had entered the company.
The rest had moved through three shell corporations.
One payment purchased a luxury condominium in Serena’s name.
Another paid for jewelry.
A third covered Grant’s personal gambling debts.
Claire studied the bank records inside Nora’s office.
“He told everyone the money saved the company.”
“It saved his image,” Nora replied.
Investigators discovered that Grant’s company had been insolvent for almost a year.
He had hidden unpaid taxes.
He had falsified construction reports.
He had used new investor money to cover older loans.
The resort was his final chance to prevent everything from becoming public.
But there was another problem.
The investor had already transferred a $4 million advance.
Grant could not explain where it had gone.
Serena’s attorney requested a meeting with prosecutors.
She was ready to cooperate.
In exchange for reduced charges, Serena provided access to a private email account.
The messages proved she helped prepare the forged deed.
They also revealed her affair with Grant.
Claire expected that truth to destroy her.
Instead, she felt strangely empty.
The marriage had already broken when Grant valued her signature more than her safety.
The affair was merely another lie inside the ruins.
Then Nora opened an email dated seven years earlier.
It had been sent before Claire ever met Grant.
The subject line read:
BENNETT LAKE PARCEL—OWNER PROFILE.

Attached was a photograph of Claire.
👉 The affair explained Grant’s betrayal, but the old email suggested his entire relationship with Claire had begun as part of the property scheme.
