Chapter 4 - The Letter Grant Hid
Claire began checking the mailbox before Grant returned from work.
Most days, it contained nothing unusual.
Then she found a plain envelope from Briar Community Bank.
The letter was addressed to both Claire and Grant.
It thanked them for opening a $1.8 million line of credit secured by the lake house.
Claire read the amount three times.
She had never entered Briar Community Bank.
She had never applied for a loan.
She had never authorized anyone to use the lake house as collateral.
Grant came home while she was still standing beside the mailbox.
“What is this?” she asked.
He looked at the letter.
For half a second, panic crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
“It’s a preliminary approval.”
“It says the account is open.”
“The bank made a mistake.”
“It says I signed the application.”
“You probably signed it with the renovation documents.”
“We haven’t renovated anything.”
Grant took the letter from her.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
“It is nearly two million dollars.”
“It’s business financing.”
“Using my house?”
“Our house.”
Claire stepped away from him.
“Show me the loan documents.”
“I don’t carry them with me.”
“Then call the bank.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“I’ve worked fourteen hours today. I’m not standing in the driveway while you interrogate me.”
He walked inside and locked himself in the study.
That night, Claire searched the bank’s online system.
Her Social Security number had been used to create an account.
The phone number attached to it belonged to Grant.
The email address looked like hers, but one letter had been changed.
She tried to download the loan agreement.
The account suddenly logged her out.
Seconds later, Grant entered the bedroom.
“You need to stop digging through things you don’t understand.”
Claire stared at him.
“How did you know I was logged in?”
Grant did not answer.
He took her laptop and closed it.
