Northgate’s records contained more than Mark’s fake treatment file.
Investigators found eleven similar cases.
Each involved a married patient with dramatic symptoms.
Each spouse was pressured to borrow against family property.
The money flowed through North Meridian Capital or another lender connected to Vanessa.
Some patients were genuinely ill.
Their diagnoses had been exaggerated to justify unnecessary procedures.
Others appeared completely healthy.
Three families had already lost homes through default.
One woman named Patricia Gomez contacted Claire after seeing Northgate mentioned in the news.
Her husband claimed he needed emergency spinal treatment.
Patricia mortgaged the small apartment building her parents left her.
The treatment never occurred.
Her husband disappeared with Vanessa’s financial coordinator two weeks later.
Patricia lost the property.
“My children grew up there,” she told Claire. “I thought I was saving their father.”
The shame in her voice sounded painfully familiar.
Claire asked why Patricia had never reported the fraud.
“Everyone said I signed the papers.”
“So did I.”
“They said being foolish isn’t a crime.”
“Trusting your spouse is not permission to steal from you.”
Patricia agreed to testify.
Other victims followed.
The pattern became clear.
Vanessa found couples with valuable property.
She recruited or cooperated with the spouse who wanted access.
Northgate created the diagnosis.
North Meridian created the loan.
The family home became collateral.
Mark was not Vanessa’s first partner.
But he had helped improve the scheme.
His background in property management taught them how to target homes with hidden development value.
Mark had personally reviewed six potential victims.
Claire saw his notes.

AVOIDS CONFLICT.
FAMILY HOME—EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT.
LIKELY TO SIGN UNDER MEDICAL PRESSURE.
The description could have been written about Claire.
It probably was.
At the bottom of her own file, Mark had added:
Eleanor is the only obstacle.
The words made Claire feel sick.
Her mother had not been confused.
