Chapter 15 - BEFORE THE WEDDING
The emails showed Mark asking Adrian Mercer for a valuation of the Bennett property.
The date was six months before Mark proposed.
He wrote:
Debt-free house. Two owners. Daughter likely controls decisions.
Claire stared at the words.
Morales asked Mark directly.
“Did you marry Claire for the house?”
Mark denied it.
He claimed Adrian asked him to evaluate properties near the neighborhood for a construction project.
Adrian confirmed part of the explanation.
Mark had valued several homes.
The Bennett property was one of them.
But another email was harder to explain.
Mark wrote:
Claire will never sell while Eleanor is alive. Pressure has to come through family need.
That sentence existed before Vanessa joined the medical-campus committee.
Before the affair.
Before the fake illness.
Mark had recognized Claire’s vulnerability early.
He may not have married her with a full criminal plan.
But he understood that family emergencies could influence her property decisions.
At trial, Mark admitted the truth.
“I loved her,” he said. “I also knew the house gave her security I never had.”
The prosecutor asked whether resentment began before the wedding.
“Yes.”
“Did Claire know?”
“No.”
“Did you believe marriage gave you a claim to the house?”
Mark looked toward Claire.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than denial.
Their marriage had contained real mornings, holidays, laughter, and care.
It had also contained a quiet belief that Claire’s inheritance should eventually become his.
Vanessa did not create that entitlement.
She weaponized it.
Claire stopped searching for one clean explanation.
Mark had loved her.
Mark had envied her.
Mark had chosen to betray her.
All three things could be true.
During a court recess, he tried to apologize again.
Claire did not stop walking.
She no longer needed him to define the marriage correctly.
